I love driving in NYC, it's probably one of the easiest major cities to navigate thru. I sure wouldn't want to do it every day, but occasionally it's a hoot!

But, taking the train in is good advice if you don't relish driving. You can park at two places now on the NJ side and take the 5-10 minute ride into the city. I like the Statue of Liberty State Park station, you can park over night there for $5 I believe, and it is a safe and patrolled parking lot. You take the NJT train (ticket is included wit the parking fee) and than the PATH train into Penn Station.
Or park at the new facility in Secaucus (Exit 15x on the NJTP) and take the 2 minute NJ Transit train into Penn Station. I think the round-trip ticket is less than $5. I'm not certain on parking, but think it is probably not an overnight facility. I've used that train station plenty, but we stay at a nearby Marriott and use their shuttle for transportation.

So, why not take the train in?
If there's no train stop near your home, you could drive to one and still save the hassle & expense of driving into the city.
Once you're in, take the subway where you need to go. Easy.

Yep, driving in the city is fine on a weekend but NOT on a weekday. It's just a waste of time with all the traffic.

Depending on where you're coming from, you can stay pretty far away from the city and take the train in. If coming from the NJ side there are oodles of stations with reasonable parking out in the suburbs. It's just the smart way to go.

And by the way there are TONS of nice watering holes and restaurants in that neighborhood. Walk over to 2nd Avenue and find a nice pub for lunch and a beer. Manchester Pub is only a block away.

Good luck!
