Yup, 53 had a split windshield, I've got a 1500 that is in need of 2 front fenders. I've been half heartedly looking for a full doghouse, but haven't had the time or $ to really get into it. My wife re-arranged the front end for me about 6 years ago.
Good luck on your project! I like both directions you have mentioned. I guess the real question is waht are you going to use it for when done? Sell it? Drive it? Show it? The open hood rod look sounds good if it's a keeper/drive/show. Either way, It will still be an awesome truck!
If you really want respect on the road, just do the drive train and leave the body in the current shape. Nothing get's the attention of the High $ cars more than a BIG RUSTY TRUCK! They really move out of the way!
