a fender being such a diminutive componant, what is the big deal? A motor? Yeah. A frame? yep. A tranny? yup. Wheels? okay. But a front fender? Just register it without a fender. Then put one on. I have three fenders hanging around. Lots of pipes, tanks, a wheel, etc. I guess I am going to start writing down VINs next rally.

hi brother moe.. what I belive we have going on here ..is a "salvage bike" needs to go thought a state inspection ... before he can get it register..and it won't pass the inspection with out the fender..and this is not a normal state inspection here in NEW YORK they are run by the cop's and this done to make sure none of the parts are hot and to make sure the vecal is safe to be on the road..I have been thought this and yes its PITA..JUST ANOTHER WAY FOR THE STATE TO MAKE A BUCK OFF YOU...
but what they are really after is to make sure the parts are not stolen ..
and folks I am only talking about NEW YORK the laws change from state to state..
and yes your right this does sound dumb..but what are going to do if you want to put it on the road this is the way they do it...

VINs are pretty close to public knowledge. As Mr. Disney mentioned, our cars and bikes readily display VINs to anyone walking past, and VINs are all over the auto for sale web sites. Perhaps MI wants to run the VIN against a stolen bike database? I don't know why that would prove effective without solid proof of the origin of the VIN as it relates to a plastic fender, but CT does weird things at DMV also. I don't see what harm could come from giving up the VIN. If there are dealers still out there making keys for VINs without proof of ownership, they should be liable for ill gotten results.

I hear ya Ed. In cases of anal retentive inspections, and one whose bike is being analyized, then the request for VIN should be made before purchase. jeez. Legitimate request or not, at least the seller won't have additional terms of sale imposed upon him/her after the deal is consummated. imho asking for the VIN after taking delivery is RUDE.

Moe, its possible the guy didnt know every technical detail of his states registration laws, and this vin problem popped up on his first trip to the dmv. Yeah it sucks the guy is calling after the fact because he didnt have his sht together, but I wouldnt call it rude. If anything refusing to cooperate is rude. Its the dmv, can you really blame the guy?
I found out when I was buying my bike that because it was out of state, I needed the title notorized by the previous owner. Just a technicality that I didnt plan for because I've never bought anything across state lines. Anyhow, I called him up and we worked it out. Without that guys help I wouldve been screwed.
I did however find a guy outside my house a couple nights ago, writing down the vin number off my truck at 3 in the morning. I tackled him to the ground and held him in a Jack Bauer interrogation choke hold until he told me the scam he was pulling...
Turns out theres an Alqaeda website that sends you $5 check for every vin number you enter into their website. (Motorcycle vins are $8) It took some coercion and 2 broken thumbs but I managed to get the website address off the guy. None of my neighbors have garages so I figure I'll stop by office depot tonight and pick up a couple packs of post-its and a decent pen possibly that writes upside down just in case.

Tom. Good point. However, any new endeavor demands a cost benefit analysis. Much like the decision to buy a vehicle. A bit of August ’07 was spent researching how to secure a temporary title for a TX prefire. What a temp title would cost, VIN number check, insurance for a second bike, getting full coverage the day I took possession, etc. I see your point. I could have been polite and used the word ‘Lazy’. Take purchasing a car. One better do some homework on cost to insure to name but one of many costs. Likewise a true cost to rebuild is how to prepare for the DMV. The VIN requirement in Michigan should be something one would know by making a few phone calls, part of the ‘to rebuild or not rebuild question’, not some obscure requirement buried in small print on line 3,432. That said, unfortunately, one can never be truly prepared for a DMV encounter, as their left hand knows not what the right hand is fondling. DMV: the epitome of double talk and catch22s.

This right here is the reason why you gotta give the guy some slack. If a person like youself, who does all the research and keeps everything in order can admit it, then its fair to say the guys not a "total idiot" and deserves at least a little cooperation.
The very fact that this front fender nonsense has us all confused/skeptical, proves that it'd be an easy thing to overlook or not account for.
(OR hes trying to steal something...haha)

I have now mailed a letter to the guy... for the second time. It includes my complete vehicle identification number, sale price of the fender and approximate sale date, my name, address and phone number and a brief history tracing my bike through the previous owner and back to the dealer where it was purchased new, indicating that to my knowledge the fender is not stolen. . I friggin' hope that is sufficient to serve his needs because i'm now officially sick of the whiny, arrogant, condescending remarks he keeps making in private messages about this thread, his supreme, unquestionable honesty, and my obvious ignorance of the laws to which he is trying to submit. So fine! I had never heard of those kinds of ridiculous requirements! I was completely ignorant to the facts, and i'm a bad, bad person for starting this thread, which clearly offended him, so that i could gain insight to his query.

Would that be a double portion of salt or grits? I learned something about DMV requirements in various states. So the thread is not a total loss. Heck as a member of this site I also learned that one cannot simply walk into a hardware store in England and buy a knife. The proverbial raison d'etat (spit)
