Backfiring doesn't necessarily mean the CDI unit. It might but there are a lot of other items that should be checked first before putting out that kind of money. Have you done anything to the bike in terms of modifications? Have you checked the intake system rubbers and vacuum caps closely for cracks? Do you have your idle mixture adjustments screws set properly (turned too far in will give you backfiring)? When were the carbs balanced last? Have you checked your spark plug colour?

When does it backfire? While idling, steady running, accelerating, decelerating? Makes a difference in diagnosing.
