I made my own filters out of cotton balls, baling wire, and duct tape.
They didn't flow very well, but that was okay since they didn't filter very well either.

I found the combination of a K&N air filter with the Polaris bellmouth intake rubber 'better-than-Triumph' snorkel thingy didn't work. The K&N just didn't marry well with the Polaris mod. In my case it was better to just yank the stock snorkel, keep the K&N, and forget the Polaris rubber intake.

Polaris intake rubber thingy thread.

Well. since the subject involves (although nobody explicitly said it) which one gets better performance from these monstrously powerful( ) bikes they may be after all.

K&N filters (wet gauze) are great at passing air, which is why they were initially used mostly in racing applications. However, K&N filters are terrible at actually filtering the dirt out of the air. The OEM filter will actually filter the air better than a K&N.

UNI filters (Cellulose foam) are great at passing air as well (maybe not as well as a K&N, but much better than the OEM filter), plus they filter the dirt out of the air as well or even better than the OEM filter.

If I had to choose I would pick the UNI filter because it actually filters the incoming air better. Over 80% of the dirt that enters any engine comes through the intake. So anything that reduces the amount of contaminates entering any engine is a good thing.
