Hello to everyone. I posted a few months ago when first bought my 09 regarding "clunky" gearbox. Anyway still not sure my box is "normal". Has had its first service (done 4500 k's now) and gearbox is still very clunky changing in first 3 gears, 4th and 5th are nice. Whencold all gears change quietly but after a few k's 1,2 and 3 just clunk. Another point of interest after my last ride is that when the bike is hot and idling a worrying knocking sound is heard from the gear box. I am going to take it to the dealer and also try and ride another America or Speedmaster to compare but was wondering if anyone else has a similar "clunky / noisey" box.

The 03 was...the 06 was and the 09 still is and I'm at nearly 4000 miles. It took till about 8500 miles for the 03 to stop being clunky.

I agree with trying another bike and also getting the dealer to check things out. My bike has no clunking at all when shifting. Other than the initial clunk when putting the bike in gear from neutral... it is smooth.

Only clunk I get on my 06 with 33kmiles is when I drop her into 1st for take off. I can eliminate that one by giving the engine a rev whilst holding in the clutch lever or hold in the clutch lever whilst rolling backwards from my shed where I put her up at night. Sounds like you got some other issues with your tranny. That initial clunk that we all experience is from clutch grab that is the result of the clutch plates sticking together somewhat.
Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin

Mine used to do that. I took of the clutch side cover and found the bolts through the clutch weren't torqued right. So the clutch wasn't opening evenly. I loosened all the bolts and torqued them up again ensuring the release button in the centre wasn't binding. All my clunks are gone.

Hey "boof" you got any further details for TUNE ONE. I didn't find anything with a google search.
Interesting idea from FrankW, thanks for that. Im starting to get the idea that our boxes should not clunk aside from neutral to 1st.

Yeah but, aren't they all a little clunky. Variables include...
- how warm the engine is - ambient temp - oil type, temp, age, weight - clutch engagement (adjustment perhaps?) - operator.
Mine goes clunk a bit and/or from time to time depending on the above variables. I always attributed it to being a 'Triumph thing.' She clunks... but not alarmingly so.
Live to love, love to live.

Compare the drag felt when pushing the bike in gear with the engine off before and after warming the bike up. If there is a lot more drag with the bike warmed up, you might have a problem with the clutch adjustment or (rare) warped clutch disks. Otherwise, try a different brand of fully synthetic oil on the next oil change. This often solves shifting problems.
