Without getting too off topic here about legal mumbo jumbo. A cop doesnt ask to search your car for no reason. Its the innocent people who act like theyre guilty that waste time, money and pisss cops off.
To get back to on topic, with all due respect to bdoc's kid. I'd take the word of a cop over a 17 year old and a felon. The smell of marijuana isnt enough for formal charges, but it sure gets the legal process flowing.
