Okay... found the camera and here's those pics you were asking about. I personally went to the rear wheel so I could loose the cable up front.

There's the pickup. Of course I got rid of the chain guard which made mounting in this location a bit easier.

This shows the little magnet glued to a sprocket bolt.

And finally, an anchor for the cable as it runs down the swingarm.

Here we go, love it. Just waiting for the cables for my T bars

It slotted right in without having to file away any of the tank console, either the speedmaster has a slightly larger tacho hole or the Acewell 2856 is slightly smaller,

Made a crude bracket, which attaches to bracket on the tank console where the Tacho was. Need to have one end of the bracket rounded so it doesn't get in the way of the tank console bracket. Also..

Made the middle hole in the bracket for the bolt to fit into the old tacho bracket a lot bigger so the bolt could move around a lot, up \ down, side to side before tightning it up as the housing is only platic and I reckon if the hole was out, any slight stress would break the tank console bracket.

That just looks great. Thanks for the pics, they provide great info for us future installers. I've been wanting to do this for a while now. I'm jealous. Keep us posted on the install too.

Yeah thanks for the pics. Helps heaps if that's the model acewell your after. I would prefer to keep my speedies console as is if that's possible and replacing my speedo with one of acewell's bracket models.

These acewell's are a nice bit of kit though.

Just so you know Stacka... the Acewell model 2853 I bought came with a bracket attached so I could have mounted it up front somehow.

well its on the bike, and I have to say it looks the bomb, just cleans the front end right up.

As Keith says, they come with a bracket and can be mounted on the handlebars if you want.

I got the 2856 model, which is the same as Keith's only it has an LED display rather than the bulbs and like Keith's one, the dispay is useless in the daytime, in fact I reckon the LED version is worse.

Takes a bit of getting used to as it sits in the tank and is not on that much of an angle, but after a morning of it, its all good. Once I get the Tbars on I reckon it will be even easier to see as the riding postion will be further back and better with the line of site.

I used the adapter straight onto the speedo cable and tucked them under the tank, setting it at around 725 mark seemed to have the speed about right.

Once I get the T bars on I will post some pictures

here we go, just ordered the attachment from acewell and plugged it right in to the speedo cable, them shuved it under the tank.

If you order the speedo from acewell in the uk then I think it will work out around $150 US and they are really good to deal with. They shipped to NZ for 10 quid, which is around $15 US, which may be cheaper than the suppliers in US

http://www.acewell.co.uk/Acewell%20Speedometers/ACE-2xxx/index.htm

There is a bit of a story around the wiring, which I will post soon. Just been out with the misses and some friends so the beers may expand the story more than is needed.

No Worries, it really was that simple - plug and play.

It has the screw adapter on one end for the cable and the plug with the electrics on the other that just fits into the back of the unit.

Waiting for some magnetic bolts to turn up so I go the same way as Keith's on the back wheel so I lose the cable on the front, but it is a good quick solution to get you up and running with minimal hassle.

There is a bit more set up, which can be found in their FAQ
to calibrate the speedo. (http://www.acewell.co.uk/FAQ/index.htm), but I found it was well out so ended up getting the misses to drive along side and calibrate that way

Ah, so the cable adapter method is only temporary for you. Strange how when I asked the vendor who was selling Acewell in the US at the time (they have since stopped selling it) about the adapter, he said there was nothing available for our bikes. I think it was a case of, "don't bother me with trivial crap... I have more important things to do."

Meanwhile I think you'll like the rear magnet/pickup setup. It effectively helps clean up the front of the bike even more. (Now, if I can only get around to hiding those unsightly electrical cables on the handlebars.)

Hey Keith & Graeme, After first reading the post I thought this was the way I would like to go.

On second thoughts I am not to sure.

With wearing a full face helmet I find I have to really bend my head forwards to read my tacho, this is my main concern. When riding around town here the boys in blue are very keen and it would be a PITA having to keep looking down at the speedo all the time and not look at the road.. All I have to do now is move my eyes and I can see the road as well as the speedo.

Do you 2 guys have that problem.

I hear ya Frank... I was concerned about that too at first. But it turned out to be no problem for me. Not sure why... maybe ya just get used to it (although there was no noticeable adjustment time), or maybe it's because the Acewell is very easy to read due to its large numbers that are easy to read under any light conditions.

If that's your only concern Frank... I'd have to say, no worries. It's just doesn't seem to be an issue. I'm sure Graeme will chime in with his experience.

Know what you mean Keith,

I would say go to these guys - Craig from Acewell in the UK & Brendon from S3 Performance in Oz were both really helpfull. Both websites list all the extra's and shipping was cheap for anyone who is going down this path.

Ha, if it would stop hammering it down hear and blowing a gale I might get a chance to get out and give it a go this is supposed to be our summer over here!! (okay deep breaths).

Took it for a spin on Saturday and my first though was, öh &*#$ I have made a mistake here, maybe I can make a casing so its angled up a bit.

But as Keith says you get used to it pretty quickly and like a car mirror you end up just giving it a quick eye glance every 10 seconds.

Look at it this way, when we open the bike up as we drive buy a couple of chicks we flicked our eyes across - no difference and it looks amazing on the bike.

Hi Stacka,

Before or after a curry?

When i was looking into this I took the tacho off the speedy and with a rough measure the Tacho was:

59 mm width on the body
44 mm deep to the underside of the collar
The opening on the console is around 64mm wide, or slightly bigger.

This was all with out a micrometer though.

The acewell 2856 will fit with Dimensions: 64mm x 40mm and 70mm on the outside collar.

http://www.acewell.co.uk/Acewell%20S...ion=full&id=18

WARNING - WARNING - with the 2856 model it has LED warning lights and so you can't have these and the tank console ones going at the same time as I have been told the neutral pulls more power and could blow the speedo. I had it on the speedo warning lights but it was crap so went back to tank console.

Thats why I think the one Keith has (2853) is a better option if you want both lights going, but not sure if they are both the same size as Keith said he had to widen the tank console hole and I didn't.

I just grabbed my vernier caliper to measure the spare console I have and the opening is 74.5 mm. That's strange... the Acewell all mounted up in the console I use is 70 mm across. Now that I'm confused I bet you are too!

Yeah Staffo, I think you will need to take off your tank console, its just 3 screws and disconnect a couple of cables to remove the tacho and give it a measure.

The Acewell model I bought (2856) was slightly different from Keith’s (2853) and so the dimensions are slightly smaller on mine, the sites listed have the dimensions.

The 2856 Model Dimensions: 64mm x 40mm
Shown here:
http://www.acewell.co.uk/Acewell%20Speedometers/ACE-2xxx/ACE-2856.htm?action=full&id=18

The 2853 Model Dimensions: 72mm dia x 58mm deep
Shown Here:
http://www.s3performance.com.au/acewell-c-1.html?osCsid=cc1t1m8huqegbbcrk8h1m3g7m4

I bought the LED version but you cant run tank console lights and the LED warning lights at the same time cause you risk blowing the speedo due to the amount of power the neutral pulls, NO big deal really as the LED unlit just looks like stickers.

BOth Sites also have all the adapters.

Thanks Graeme I appreciate you're taking the time mate. Btw, I hope you don't know anyone effected by the earthquake. We have 4 firies from my Brigade over with the NSW USAR contingent. I don't envy their job I tell you. I've seen too much in my 23 years now and feel I've had my fair share.

So I hope you and yours are all well.

Regarding the hole diameter where the tacho in the console goes, I'm actually thinking of using it for a different purpose. I've got a number of various ideas running around in my head with future improvements but one I'm toying with is a bit different to mainstream at the moment.

I might keep my ideas to myself from now on though cos I'm doing a lot of thinking and talking but not enough doing. Of course if I need a hand cos someone else has already done something I want to do also, I think it'll be fairly obvious ha ha

Hey mountainman I had a few questions for you...
I'm in the middle of an acewell install and I'm curious about you magnet set-up on the sprocket bolt. What is the width on that magnet? The reason I'm asking is I mounted my sensor in the same place, and I used a RE magnet on the sprocket bolt. My magnet is .5 in thick and a rough measurement of the gap reads 5/16 or 7.94mm. How picky is the sensor accuracy? It seems if you used a bigger magnet you could possibly interfere with thee chain adjuster (ie 2 re mags stacked were 1 in thick so im guessing I'll need a 3/4).
My second question is about the led indicators on the speedo. My plan is to just hook up the signal indicator due to me switching to led signals. The rest of my console is incandescent bulbs. The flasher I ordered came with a sample led lamp in the shape of our bulbs, but failed to work. I might have got a dud, but would it be better for me to change out the console bulb or hook up the speedos leds? I'm just saying for visibility purposes........ Thanks for you help

Hey Philip, that magnet is about 6mm across and maybe 4mm long... it's tiny. Yeah, it wouldn't take much for the magnet to be too long and hit the chain adjuster... I'd say I have about 1 mm of clearance. I had to crazy glue it on the sprocket bolt so it wouldn't jump onto the adjuster. As far as the sensor goes, it's about 9mm away from the magnet and works just fine. This magnet is one of those rare earth magnets so it really strong.

The Acewell lights suck on my model. They are dim and the light they produce tends to bleed off to adjacent lights so they end up interfering with each other. I'd keep the console lights if I were you... even change them over to LED.

First I wrapped the tach wire around a spark plug wire... that didn't work, just made the readout jump all over the place. Then I wired it into one of the coils... that worked perfectly until I changed to Nology coils, then the readout became sporadic again.

My review:
The Good:
Having a tach again is real nice. Like the clock and resetting the trip meter is real easy. I had a drag special before and the re-set wheel would not always zero out. The speedo is real accurate, compared it against my GPS it is right on..Got rid of the front speedo cable..like that...I don't use the other features, trip time and etc...
The Bad:
The indicators lights are hard to see in the day time... basically can't see the neutral light
At night the blue back light makes the speed and tach hard to see...

Overall I am glad it got one.

That's too bad, I was just marveling over this on the other thread. Still looks like a really good way to clean up the handle bars and console.

Hey Dave... I never found the idiot light shortcomings to be of any particular consequence. The console lights are still there so it's all good. Still though, for installations where the Acewell lights are the only ones it would be a drag.

Welcome Jim to the brotherhood of the speedo.

I am used to mine now, all the people who told me to go buy a Harley as that's what I was trying to do with my bike all now agree it looks way better.

I bought the LED version (2856 Model) but you cant run tank console lights and the LED warning lights at the same time cause you risk blowing the speedo due to the amount of power the neutral pulls (or so i was told).

Had the LED lights and they were useless, so went back to tank lights.

Haven't had any problems with the tacho, but as the speedmaster has a tacho it was just a case of using the exisiting wire - can take photo if anyone wants
