If anything is used, it should be a metal crush type gasket. As for the silencer (muffler)/pipe connection, unless one bit or the other is damaged or there is some missmatch in size, any leakage should be self sealing as carbon deposits build up. Or, maybe I'm thinking of stem bolts.
