When I bought my not-really-needed solenoid, the counter guy at Hermey's said he didn't recall ever selling on for any new Bonneville. I should have heeded that advice instead of blindly replacing it.....

Speaking of symptoms, what was the problem? No start at all times or when certain conditions were met? That could be caused by any number of items already mentioned. The check for the solenoid is to apply power to the control lead to get the plunger to move. I think you said yours worked when you jumpered it. Leads me to believe you could have a problem with something other than the solenoid.
