So, I've been a lurker on this site since late 03/early 04. My sights have been set on an these bikes since before that when I caught my first sight of one in 2002 at Baxter Cycle when a buddy was picking up a new TT600. The time has come to finally pull the trigger. I have cut my teeth over the last couple of years with a 1980 CX500 custom (sweetheart of a bike, but the looks are tough to love) folllowed by a V Star 650 (Nice enough looks, but a complete POS where it counts). This is the spring I WILL be buying the America/Speedmaster of my dreams. I'm caught on the 07 year due to the change in sprocket covers/passenger pegs and the classic tank/carbs.
The questions I have are in regards to what I should look for in a used Triumph? I'll be checking the chain/rear sprocket, feel for any catching in the neck bearings, checking the electrical, and giving it a once over, but is there anything specific to put my eyes on? With the fork shrouds the fork seals are pretty hard to check. Any help is greatly appreciated because after a couple of throw away bikes this is the one i'm keeping indefinitely.
