The familiarity part in many times relates to what people have been used to riding. Many V-twin owners that go to the Triumph tend to not rev the bike to it's most efficient range. They were used to shifting sooner. Ideally, you want to be sure you are winding the bike out to 4k or so and keeping it above around 3K. Running the bike at too low an rpm will require more throttle twisting.

If that's not the case, you may need to get a service dealer that knows the bike to make sure it is properly set up (tuning, jets, etc.).
