I got to say guy if this was out last year all jokes aside I would have had one sadly. Its a low bobber with forwards and a fat front tire. Everything but the 2.1 gallon tank LOL The only differences is my wife would not be riding on it and my back would be killing me. But its as close to a perfect Harley in my eyes. Note not a perfect bike my speedy is going to be a perfect bike when it is done http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Con...#/model/xl1200x
Life need a little Triumph!

Yeah, change the tank and ride! Looks pretty good except for that.

Harley has really been doing some cool things with the sportys the last couple of years....
the nightster, 883 iron, xr1200, and now this.
Expanding the line of their most reasonably priced bikes sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

While I see your point Rich, but I have to say I think Stew made some even better points above. Especially that last one about Harley appearing to concentrate their latest efforts on their most affordable bikes. Sounds like a pretty smart move to me also, considering the present economy and all. (...though I still don't get why they're callin' it the "48"???...I mean nobody in that video I watched looked much over 28!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Its only marketed in the continental lower 48 I assume. I think they have a good idea there too. Their sales are off 7% more than the rest and they think they will drop 5% more this year. They are still over 200,000 bikes a year though. HD will survive the recession I figure. As long as there is silk screening to be done. Oh, and the bikes too

Nice looking bike, but that gas tank is waaaaay too small. Overall I think it's over priced too, no Sporty is worth paying over $10K for...

Triumph would charge 10k if they made a 1200. They are at 8 for an 865 and 13 for a 1600. Split the difference you get a 1200 and split the price you get 10,500.

Difference is you would be getting a quality bike that is worth 10k - with a Triumph badge on the tank!
...and why is it called FORTY EIGHT? FORTY EIGHT reasons not to buy or is it 19FORTY EIGHT technology or perhaps FORTY EIGHT things to go wrong in the first 12 months.
As for their plan - price point is one thing but they must produce quality. If this suffers in the downturn (and it normally does when the bean counters take over) then their problems will grow - no question.
Don't get me wrong - I like some of the Harley range very much and hope they come out the otherside in good shape but they need to be way more innovative than this.

Sportsters are great-looking bikes, but they're just too small for me.

I'm thinking that 48 is how many miles between gas stops. Since it isn't a springer and the engine isn't a flathead or Panhead, it has nothing to do with a '48 Harley. They only mention the torque, maybe it has 48 HP? Maybe it burns/leaks 48 quarts between oil changes?

Does it leak like a 48? I like the first comment over on the Cyril Huse blog: "I think it looks pretty cool but it’s a Sporster. How do they get over the image that Sporsters are for women?" http://www.cyrilhuzeblog.com/2010/01/22/...e-city-brawler/

Always been a Sporty fan - I don't care what they say about its feminine leanings - To me smaller has always been better except when you get down to fuel capactity. That's where this thing leaves me disappointed. I played with the customizing gizmo and with small shield, a seat that will accept a pillion, some blacked-out pipes and a backrest you raise the ante about a G. All acceptable in my thinking except for that tank. I'm thinking that If I was looking for a bike and I could get beyond the tank issue it would make my short list.

True, but a Triumph will last longer than 4 years ($10,499 / $7 per day, as stated in their video)
And Triumphs have nicer looking tanks Apart from that, it looks ok

That is just the payment estimate - MSRP, 10% down, 60 month & 9.25%, gives you a payments of just under $200 a month, hence $7 a day.

T say a Sporty is a girl's bike is akin to saying a Bonnie is. Lame. After owning 4 of the big Harley's it would have to be a GREAT deal for me to buy another-but I'd think long and hard about a steal on a Sportster. They are way more fun the the "schoolbus".

Do they throw in a free rivet? If so, would they allow "Go Your Own Way. TRIUMPH"?

Yep, ever since HD brought it out the Sporty has been a direct competitor for the Bonneville (and they aren't slammed as girly bikes) and I've liked them both. I quite like this bike aside from the peanut tank; and, who doesn't love a fatty out front? Actually, that tiny tank could be a blessing to get you off the vibrator before you go numb.
Standard Bonnies and Sporties are within an inch of being the same size with the Sporty weighing in a little over 50 lbs heavier. There's a pretty good premium on the extra 30 ft/lbs of torque this model makes but it is a 1200. Still, to get to 80 ft/lbs you'd probably spend just as much with Bonneville Performance building up a standard so it could be a wash...then it's just down to which marque you prefer. It does show that HD realizes it needs to really appeal to its entry level buyers and this offering should work for them.

In the circles I hang in the Sporty is called a girls bike but it is in jest. I don't like them from a mechanical point of view. I haven't been inside one in years but I wouldn't imagine they changed much inside. They are over complicated and prone to failure. But as for the girls bike thing, I never really understood that since the big HP bikes and drag racing bikes and such are Sportster engines.( at least they used to be)

Aside from the major change to the tranny which no longer has a trap door they've been the same basic four cam EVO for a very long time now. Sure are a lot of them around here being turned into hardtail bobbers, I see those rough riders all of the time.

Well Barry and Ed, OBVIOUSLY you two don't understand the "reasoning" of WHY it's become "common knowledge" among the "Lifestyle Crowd" that a Sportster is a "girl's bike"!!!
You SEEEEEE, it's 'cuz ANY motorcycle that can ACTUALLY handle twisty roads in a relatively "sporty" manner(and hence H-D actually naming their product as a derivation of that word "sporty"), and ANY motorcycle that COULDN'T be considered little more than just some chrome-ladened and lumbering "penis-extention" of a motorcycle, such as most of H-D's vast line of "Big-Twin" motorcycles, THEN by extention(oops there's that word "extention" again) THOSE motocycles(and that's the former models I mentioned here) would NATURALLY be considered a "girl bike"!!!
(now...do you two, OR ANYBODY ELSE for that matter, have any OTHER questions you need answers to here???)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

You're probably right. I guess I'll get in touch with my feminine side and go rip some twisties...

Ahhh, yeah, I think, perhaps, maybe. However, Dwight, that hint of doubt and/or confusion may only be because of your exuberant use of the comma, and the parentheses (traits for which I had originally prided myself). It seems, in these recent days, weeks, and perhaps months, that your typical rant (I, in no way mean that in any form of derogatory vain) is so very populated with copious quantities of various punctuation, particularly the aforementioned, and a very strong hint of fragmented thought patterns, that I suspect, and perhaps fear I will soon become ‘comma’ tose.
