What do you do when you have a bad meal out at a restaurant you can always do this.

Landlord Earl Cadogan shuts exclusive London restaurant because he didn't like his meal

Great to have that power

Bit more to this than the headline I reckon" £££££ $$$$$ " . but it makes great press
One thing I am wary of is sending my food back if not happy with it, not sure what they will then do with it before it comes back atb geoff

So the restaurant has been there for 25 years and because the landlord had a bad experience, he refuses to renew the lease thereby forcing the closure of an established business? Another rich dick doing whatever he feels like. A real douchebag.

Snobby bloke, snobby place
I quote "place to see and be seen"
So to me it sounds like the type of place that will charge the earth for substandard food and service, but will allow you to be sneered at by the staff

Sort of place that would do their best to stop me walking on the pavement outside, whether I had 20p or £1000 in my pocket

They deserve each other IMO

After reading the article, I agree brindle. Sounds like everybody involved are in 'like' company. Snotbutts treating people like snotbutts who treat people like snotbutts.

Yes you do send the food back and nicely complain...as for shutting down the restaurant, what an arrogant a****le!!!
Bet ya he puts his pants on just like the rest of us. I just love it when the rich tell others the way it's gonna be. What a loss to the neighborhood in London.

I dont see a problem. Its the owner's perogative, and seems like its not an exclusive opinion about the place. Plus, with a two year notification, why didnt the restaurant get its act together and find a new location?

As for the owners's wealth being an issue, I dont see it ( other than it affords him the ability to own that particular place ), it only seems an issue with someone jelaous of another's wealth.

Okay, I didn't see the two year notice at first, so I understand that point of it, but if they pay the rent, why would the building owner care if the restaurant has high prices and bad service? It does not reflect on him personally, he just owns a building. But to use poor service, high prices, bad food, whatever as an excuse is ridiculous. Maybe there is more to the story, there usually is,
but the dude sounds like a to me.
Kind of like a 10 year old taking his ball and going home.

Maybe Earl Cadogan feels because they have high prices and bad service he wasn't confident they'd remain in business much longer. Being at such a risk, his revenue stream could end just when he's purchasing his fifth Rolls Royce...inconvenient for him.

If you want bad service and product at low prices, there's always the fast food places

Let's eat at home thought for the day:

If a restaurant has a skrummy bathroom made available to the public,
what must their non-public kitchen area look like?

Restroom cleanliness is a key indicator to me also. I figure if they can't keep that clean, I don't want to eat there. I once took a manager by the neck and stuffed his head reaaallll close to the urinal, so he could see and smell what I was complaining about.

Well, "HE STARTED IT!"... If I tell you your urinal is gross, don't stand 3 feet away and tell me "I don't see a problem!"

I'm just saying...

later, Tom.

But, what do I know?

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Nice one Tom

Just remind me to never upset you. At least if we're in the same country

Money does have it's benefits. Cadogan's property, his call - whatever the reason! I had a landlord do a similar thing to one of my pizzeria's years back.

The media's attention has provided FREE advertising and a sympathetic ear for the Oriel. Win-Win situation as I see it - if the Oriel is smart enough to continue using it to their benefit.

Probably won't be long before another landlord offers space (for even more publicity).

Too often people lose sight of that. I once had a tenant who went out of his way to p!ss me off whenever possible. I finally reminded him that his lease was up and all I had to do was give him 30 days notice to vacate, so knock off the attitude. He actually threatened me! It took a few months before I could actually get him out but it was worth it.

As for complaints in restaurants, if it was so bad I will not be going back I just leave. But, if I want them to fix something before I come back I always ask for the owner/manager and privately explain what the problem is. Calm & polite, as if I'm telling a friend he has spinach in his teeth.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Good point. An old axiom from the campfires of effective communication goes "Public praise, private admonishment". If the goal is to suggest change, talk in private. The person will thank you for it.

If the goal is to sell newspapers, reverse the axiom & fire away. I've yet to see where someone who was embarrassed in public, suddenly agree "You're right, I'm an idiot"

........and then sometimes it's all entertainment
