Does anyone know if our Triumph Engines will turn an 18 inch rim 300mm wide tire without any serious issues and cruise at highway speed acceptably? This is just a question so I can decide on a future build.
Thanks in advance,

Doubtful. But you'd have to use some sort of jackshaft to space the chain out far enough to clear the wheel. I think Rick Fairless did that on one of those biker build-off shows with an old school Triumph engine. That would allow you to gear it down a bit to turn the tire easier.

Yep, I have seen a bike at Strokers in Dallas Texas with an old school Triumph engine. I plan on a jack shaft. Now, I have to decide Rigid or soft tail?

I'm sure it would if you could get the right sprockets to change the gearing. Or find a low profile tire so as not to increase the dia. too much.

Carl Stephens also ran a huge back tire on his Metric Revolution TV bike. But he turbocharged his Speedmaster engine. Don't know how wide the tire was or whether he needed a jackshaft. Can't imagine he didn't need one.

If you're going to put a back tire that big on I think the only way to go is Rigid.

How did he put the power to the rear wheel on that bike?

Now that I think about it, I think it was a "friction drive." That would make sense with the engine turned around. One way to get the rear wheel going in the right direction again.

Here you go, from the man himself: http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...true#Post148944Unfortunately it looks like Carl is out of the bike business, or at least he's using a different name, since http://www.moonshinesteel.com doesn't go anywhere anymore. Which I'd saved more pictures of his bike.

Off topic: I was searching for more images of Carl's bike online when I came across a thread on TRat. Sometimes I forget what arrogant snobbish a-holes they have over there.
