has anybody else noticed that the new wide glide looks awfull similer to another bike most of us are familier with?? the styling, not the engine, but the styling. looks to me like once again h.d. is trying to compete directly with another company that is one yr older than they are, much like the 50s when they introduced the spotster
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

The dealer gets to determine the trade in value Not KBB or NADA so hold onto your wallets.
"The trade-in must be in good condition and good working order, as determined by the Harley-Davidson® dealer in its sole discretion. The Harley-Davidson dealer has the right to decline any trade-ins."
Looks like this is all a scam to get folks in the door looking.

Yeah, I am sure they will tell me when I bring in my 2007 Hyosung 250cc cruiser (which actually is a great bike) that this model isn't "competitive."

I just read your blog about this, John. Yep, ain't it more than a just little ironic that TRat never seemed to warm to idea of a Triumph "cruiser" and in the past blocked every effort of yours to even mention this website geared to such, and YET here they are pretty much promoting a completely different motorcycle company known far and wide for makin' just about knowin' ELSE?!!! (yep, I'll betcha if the great american short story author William Sydney Porter, aka "O.Henry", were still among the living, I'm pretty sure he'd appreciate your take on this "twist ending" of a motorcycle tale, alright!!!)

Actually I'm quite sure they would accept your Hyosung and give you top dollar for it to boot. It wouldn't be because they consider it competitive or because they will do much more than scrap it when you leave the showroom with your new discounted Harley Davidson, but because they are working off of several different invoices and with figures we will most likely never see.
I have a friend who worked in auto sales for 30+ years both as a salesman and as a manager. All I can say is that I’ve listened to him talk about it for hours and I still don’t understand all of the figures and calculations they use. All I know for sure is that they rarely loose money on a deal (it is as rare as a lottery mega win but it has been known to happen) and that the deal you get is only a deal as compared to someone else’s regular price.

maybe there's something wrong with the universe!

HD dealers have been doing this sort of thing all year. In July my brother got MSRP trade-in for his 03 Road King on a new Rocker ( I think that's what it's call).

The real money in auto or cycle sales in the used market, there is no "invoice". The buyer has no idea what the seller has in the used vehicle.
Most buyers only concern is monthly payment which in many cases allows the seller to hose them on financing.

They need to. Sales were off a whopping 37% by the middle of last summer and prospects haven't been looking good; predictions are for a three fold increase in sales by the end of 2010 and that will only be half of 2007 sales. It's dismaying to witness yet another venerable vehicle manufacturer being dragged into the abyss by the sub-prime mess.

They have a problem for mentioning this this site? So much for being brethren with a common interest. In the real world of polit...(shaddup), t-rat would be China and you would be Google. Nice showing, yo! BTW, I noticed at the bottom of your page two words you had to enter for spamming purposes were prickled and reason. Kinda describes their banning you. I got on there because of here. Sheesh.

Victory had a $2500 rebate on 2 models this month. Maybe Jackpot and Vegas? I would consider trading in for one over an H-D.

I think besides the subprime mess the auto industry has over expanded production capacity. The world needs about 60 million autos a year, but auto manufactures have about 93 million in production capacity. What compounds the problem is that Euro govs pay manufactures to continue near max production, ie no lay offs.

Good point, Mac! But what I'm also wondering is if in addition to the global financial meltdown and as you noted a surplus of inventory in motorcycle market, just as there was the "dark days" of early-to-mid 1980s moto market, if maybe the demographic factor, once again just in those times, might also factor into this drop in sales. You see, I've always kind'a thought one the reasons moto sales lanquished during the 1980s was because many of the Boomers who once rode during their teens and twenties had stopped riding during 1980s was because they were raising their children.(ie: The wife told 'em, "You ain't ridin' no motorcycles until the kids are grown!"
And so, seeing as how the cruiser market especially is spurred mostly by the older crowd, then maybe us older folks(50-65 y/o) just aren't inclined to purchase as many motorcycles as we did for say other reasons such as medical, and not just for economic reasons alone. And this might especially apply to those older folks who never rode in their youth but just had to have that there Harley-Davidson motorcycle at least once in their lives while this whole Harley sales phenomenon was peaking the last decade or so.
(just a thought there)

Dwight, I agree with your point concerning MCs. I was really off topic and making a point about automobile excess production capabilities. Oldroadie mentioned the demise of venerable vehicle manufacturers, most biting the big one are auto manufactureres. Please excuse my spelling, I as usual can't find my glasses to see the keyboard.

That's a very good observation. In 2000, HD shipped about 200,000 bikes and by 2007 they were putting out over 330,000 units...that's a huge increase. Last year they were back to about 270,000 but only 210,000 were in the US. If they were smart they'd go back to the waiting list years of the 90s (they only made 105,000 in 1995) and hold production down.
Any way you look at it they cut back more units than Triumphs total output and that really has to hurt them. No wonder they killed Buell.

I really expect Indian to die from this downturn and maybe Norton, too.

oldroadie, we could only be so lucky as to have Indian die for good. Im sick of people draggin that name thru the mud.
now as for this harley thing....only competitive bikes? so i'd have to yank a spark plug and flatten a tire to do a trade in? good thing im not interested in harleys. (i only like motorcycles).

Sad isn't it? The original marque were some great, great bikes but the last couple of iterations have been poorly thought out. This latest batch of team built bikes sure is pretty and well appointed but they still haven't solved the Gilroy era Power-Plus vibration problems.
