Yup, block that tube right off. Vented cap eliminates any need for it. Can't wait to see the finished product. Seal the tank with Caswell sealer as rust is inevitable after welding (ask me how I know). Caswell is the Best sealer I've found by far!

I think he's showing his bike because it also has lost the console. Just a guess, John. These Hi-jackers these days... Looking forward to some more posts as you go!!! Pretty interesting so far. I'm anxious to see what you decide with the tube.

Yeah, I suppose. It's a really nice bike. Better quality pictures would land in my cool bikes gallery for sure.

That musta been it! But it is missing the console. Did I read somewhere that the Bonneville tank is a non-fit?

No, it's been done, if I recall correctly, with some persuading with a hammer on the underside, in the tunnel.

My buddy has some goop for that. This is not his first modified tank. I don't remember what it's called, what brand. He just calls it "tank sealer." I can find out if you like.

Since I'm currently in progress with an older bike I've been cruising posts about tank sealers and Caswell gets a lot more positive votes than Kreem; consensus seems it's all about the ethanol eating away the Kreem and not hurting the Caswell product. I have no experience with either but that's been my take on a couple of months of post surfing.

The shop where I dropped off the tank said to take it to a radiator shop to seal it..I will look at the Caswell...thanks Just read the Caswell stuff doesn't seem that hard to do...do you think a radiator shop would do a better job?..I have never used this stuff

I did take my tank to the local radiator shop to have it leak tested and I had two tiny holes brazed to repair the leaks they found. Next I'll be sealing the interior with Caswell to insure success; seems like a small price to pay to keep gas from dripping on a hot engine...

I've used Por15 to seal a tank here in Australia, and highly recommend it, I have no idea if you guys can by it in the US though

I was told this afternoon by Tigman to take mine to a radiator shop too.

Not sure how we'll test mine, but when Gene hacked up his last tank he put an aircraft style gas cap (weld-in) and used the bolt holes to attach a flange he made with an air hose quick-connect fitting and an air pressure gauge. He pumped it up and threw it in to a full bathtub. I think that was before he coated the inside with sealer. It took a few tries to catch all the holes.

The radiator shop made sense to me, finding leaks under pressure is what they do.

A significant bit of progress today but I feel bad. I was watching football with my girlfriend all day while my buddy was working in the shop. Unfortunately I just have a fuzzy phone camera picture. http://twitpic.com/zo09oNext time he'll weld in the sight gauge bungs and the filler bung. There are a couple high spots on the large patch that need further shrinking. Then we'll seal the inside and start a skim coat of mud on the top. It's gonna be AWESOME.

A little more progress today, but very significant progress... The little dots are shrinkage marks from that boxy gun-like device in the background. He wants to do a little more of that to minimize the filler needed. That gun also spot-welds rivets onto metal for the purpose of pulling dents and will be used on a small dent to the right of the gas filler. Then we seal it, test it for leaks and start the bodywork and paint. Dude, test for leaks first so if you do have to braze a leak you don't compromise the sealer.

Actually I wasn't talking about it much. I was trying to be secretive because I thought we were on track for getting it done and I wanted to roll it out all finished. But I don't care about that anymore.
