No, you don't have to lock it. If you choose not to lock it, then the cap won't 'freewheel'. That means that the Triumph logo will be at any angle it ends up. You won't be able to rotate the cap without unscrewing it or tightening it. Not a big deal, but that's the only disadvantage I can see to that.
