..and the GPS is gone. I'd like to believe it was someone who was so very desperate for cash, during these hard times. But I know it's not the case. I suppose it was a couple of goof ball kids, cracking car windows and making a quick buck of my 'entry-level' TomTom GPS. Insurance paid for the window... just sux, is all.

It does suck. We need to be more cautious about hiding our candy.

Could be right about the goof ball kids. My sister's house was broken into the day after Christmas. A laptop, X box and other electronics were stolen. Police suspect it was a 17 year old who lives in the neighborhood. He was caught breaking into another house a couple of weeks earlier.
Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

What is the world coming to? Even in Helena, over the holidays, there was a bunch of thefts out of cars in the two downtown parking garages. They suspect a semi-organized group of teenage hoodlums. They also think most of the cars they stole from weren't locked (that's Montana for you), but they did slash one Jeep's soft top.

GPS units are the new 'car radio' for break ins. Many car stereos now are so unique to the individual makes and models, that theives find it non-profitable (and too much work) to steal them. On the other hand, GPS units are easy targets, don't require prying out anything, and can be sold quickly for a few bucks. Hide yer crap! Also, don't just take the GPS down and leave the mount stuck to the windshield. A mount simply says the GPS is likely somewhere in the car, just not on the windscreen. Finally, the suction cups leave a tell tale ring on the windscreen, so clean the marks off every once in a while. Above lessons learned "the hard way."

In the "bigger" town just north of me, a couple of 17 year olds were caught breaking into churchs to steal computer stuff and a riding lawn mower. The following month, a couple of others broke into the Salvation Army and trashed the place, just for kicks. And finnally, in my area, there has been a rash of graveyard destruction, with hundreds of tombstones knocked over in 5 different graveyards, over the course of a couple of years. I've got a feeling that there is not a lot of, "contemplating about the afterlife", going on with some of the youth in my area. And this is not a big city area. Mostly small towns and good folks.

I drive a lot (50k/year) for work and have to park in some dubius places. I never leave my GPS in the car. I have been leaving my bracket though, which is probably asking for trouble. I've been running an XM radio since '03 and they were kind of hot to steal in the beginning. I used to pull out my SkiFi2 unit, but stopped doing that in '05-'06. My wife got me a new XpressRCi for Christmas, so I've now been pulling that new model as well. I have gear stashed everywhere when checking into a hotel.... Oh yeah, the removable face-plate headunit also comes out. Here's what my cockpit looks like when I'm on the road. [image] [/image]

I travel frequently and train with LE officers all over the U.S. GPS units are the #1 item stolen from vehicles. Leaving anything like that where it can be seen is asking for trouble. Breaking a $200 window to steal a $200 unit is 1 thing, but then they also take whatever else may be concealed in the vehicle (guns, cash, other electronics, etc.). I carry a backpack in the trunk and take everything valuable with me into the hotel every night.

Tinted windows keep a-holes from seeing in your car. Too bad they have laws against any useful shade of darkness...

Back in the 70's in NYC we set up bait cars for junkie thieves. We would get a car from the property clerk and put an empty TV box in the back seat with some heavy bricks taped to the bottom and leave the car with the doors unlocked.
Then we would set up surveillance on the vehicle and wait for the mopes to steal the box. Our record was 8 arrests in two hours involving 6 different people.
Never leave anything in the car visible that could be determined by a thief to be valuable. I routinely leave my .44 Special in a used Mcdonald burger bag on the front seat and nobody has ever expressed any interest in that. However it makes a dandy place to leave a revolver.

Sorry to hear your vehicles are being broken into, but some ****** has even stolen your steering wheel, seeing as its not there on the right side of the car

Can you stop at a McDonalds & just get the bag, or do you have to actually consume one ?

Feel violated don't ya.
Had my BMW broken into 3 time in the mid 80s right in front of my home. All they took was the expensive stereo, except for the last time. I had left a leather jacket in the back seat, a leather jacket I had bought 100s of miles away on a trip to chitown. Long story short, one day a guy in his early 20s walks into my work with the jacket on, I call the police, they show up, seems my name and ss# are written in the inside chest wallet pocket. They guy turns out to live in the suburbs with his parents and has a garage full of my radios. Yes, he did time.

What are the odds of that? A guy walks into your job with your coat on! You hear about these things on occasion, but hearing it first hand... Hope you received all of your posessions back that the schmuck stole.

True the odds for a meeting are low, unless you were living in Topeka, Kansas. It's a very small town, socially. Turned out that I knew at least 10 people that knew him or his family.

Okay, I gotta ask here Mac...That stock of stolen radios were in his parent's garage, huh?!
Hmmmmmm...shades of the moronic so-called "parents" who didn't know what the h*ll their kids were up to in Columbine High about a decade ago, huh?!
(why to some people feel compelled to breed, huh?!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
