Back in the 70's in NYC we set up bait cars for junkie thieves. We would get a car from the property clerk and put an empty TV box in the back seat with some heavy bricks taped to the bottom and leave the car with the doors unlocked.

Then we would set up surveillance on the vehicle and wait for the mopes to steal the box. Our record was 8 arrests in two hours involving 6 different people.

Never leave anything in the car visible that could be determined by a thief to be valuable. I routinely leave my .44 Special in a used Mcdonald burger bag on the front seat and nobody has ever expressed any interest in that. However it makes a dandy place to leave a revolver.
