I'd like to know what CDI unit is supposed to go with the early 03 Americas with a serial number below 237500. It appears the PDF file from Procom only shows that their CDI units are for units >237500 and they have two different units for that series???
Hi Greg, Not wanting to appear dumb. What do you mean by serial number?
I have a 2004 Speedmaster built in 02 of that year. The Igniter is part number T1292060.
Hey Frank,
I went to the Bike Bandit website to see what info they had regarding the CDI units and they show a difference in their part numbers for bikes manufactured before 237000 verses those manufactured after. I think this is determined by the last 6 digits in our serial number (serial number being the VIN#). Mine is in the 170000 range so it appears I would need the earlier CDI model which Procom doesn't appear to support.
I guess I need to pull my tank and see what is actually stamped on mine but can't do it until the @$#%&^* spring. I wonder if it really makes any difference which one is purchased.
Here is the section pasted from the Bike Bandit website. The part numbers are probably theirs and not Triumph OEM.
7: IGNITER, 2 CYL, 270, EVAP SERIAL NUMBER 237501 AND HIGHER 5567481-001 Enter 0-99 $564.32 7: IGNITION CTRL UNIT,TWIN,270 IGNITION TIMING SERIAL NUMBER 237500 AND BELOW 5567480-001 Enter 0-99 $606.93

Maybe this will help. http://www.triumphtwinpower.com/triumph-twin-igniter-info.php It's not a complete list, if anyone has a different part number on their bike, mail me with model and year and I'll update the list. Cheers.

I have an '03 America (VIN SMT905JN02J150218) My bike has 34k on the odometer and still has all the stock ignition components. I was in a NY dealership last week (Destiny Motorsports) and the owner suggested I'd get a noticable performance pop from Nology coils. Given I haven't experienced any issues, would upgrading to the coils and this CDI unit be a good move. At some point, my stock components have to fail.

This couldn't be more perfect timing for me. Been looking all over ****** for something new that would work on my chop & only finding used O.E.M. at pinwall for $150. I wasn't even aware of people having problems with these. I'll be pickin' one up for sure.

I ordered one today after talking to Wesley Zhou.
Lowdown from scribbled notes:
Only good for Carburetor motorsickles while the fuel injected ignitors are in R&D.
This unit is good for 7 of 9 Triumph CDI Part Numbers. 7 of 9: eye candy
This new CDI is good for most all the naturally aspirated 360 and 270 engines.
That blue wheel has 0-9 positions. positions 0,8,9 are empty (for future use) Positions 1 through 7 are available.
This means that this unit will be produced instead of the current Triumph parallel twin 360 procomm CDI's.
My bonnevilleamericas will use blue wheel position '4'.
FYI - here's a similar unit for our fuel injected models. $319. Scroll to bottom of page for part numbers.

Hey Greg, If this helps the last six numbers of my VIN are 194433. Igniter part no 1292060 which according to the list is supported by Procom.

He said I'd notice a difference in the upper RPM's. Mine seem to be working fine, I'll probably just save my cash and see how these new CDI's workout. Quote:

Call me skeptical. I purposely wide-gapped (.045 - .050) a set of plugs & took the bike to the limiter. I didn't notice any misfire until the rev limiter intervened.

Al, I've been running the Nology coils for 20k miles now and they made the engine run smoother on the highway, but probably no noticeable hp increase.

Ok, once again here is the question. Which ignitor do you use for the 270 engines below 237500 and for the ones above 237501 for the America? Maybe I'm getting my > < signs mixed up????

I really think we are being steered the wrong way on this!! Procom make ONE cdi unit... all you have to do is note the number on your triumph one and set the blue dial accordingly. Please correct me if Im wrong, I normally am TrOjAn

You are right about only needing the unit then picking the proper setting but I can't take the tank off my bike right now to see if there is a setting for my bike. All I have is the VIN#. Note the chart.
Ignitor #1291150 is for the America with VIN 237501 > 281465-F2/279278-F4 Ignitor #1292060 is for the America with VIN >237500.
I have an early model with the VIN in the 175000 range. Which setting do I pick? Guess I'll have to wait till the spring when I pull the tank and check.

now this has me wondering... i have the nology coils and hot wires resistor plug wires, and they tell you with the wires not to mess with the timing. A) would i still be able to use the CDI if I left the timing alone (just played with rev limit) and B) would it be worth my time to buy the unit if I left the timing alone anyhoo?

As far as the wires, I would call and talk to Wesley at Procomm. Tell him you're from BA.com. I wouldn't play with the rev limiter w/o changing valve springs, retainers, etc, because it comes set at 9500rpm. Even if it performed no better than stock, it would be worth the money since it's $400 cheaper.

Ok, as for VIN numbers.. dumb question but in the USA are they the same as for the UK? ie: over here they are Vehicle Identification Numbers.. is that the same over there?
I ask as my VIN is miles away from those numbers, but I would expect that as Wesley is from the States and most likely only has access to the VIN`s for over there..

It's not your VIN# it's the part# on your stock CDI.

Well thats what I thought.. I couldnt understand why Wesley had put out about the VIN numbers.. seeing as there appears to be only 2 part numbers for the speedmaster I dont see why we need to worry, as long as we set the blue dial to the correct number which responds to the original one we take off then theres no problems.
Looks to me like its overly confusin, trying to work out why Wesley posted that list of VIN numbers ??

If the part number on the original igniter is gone or illegible, one can order a Procom replacement based upon the bike's VIN.

I suppose if any of us 865 owners ever get around to doing a 790 cam swap, procomm could tell us which map would be appropriate? I'm interested in doing this, but no immediate plans, but I'd like to hear if anyone else does it and how it works out.

C'mon, you have no idea why the price went up. Maybe their supplier/manufacturer jacked the price on them. It isn't always profiteering.

If so, it would be good to convey such circumstances to the consumer who already feels ripped off at every turn. Stirring up a little empathy in the hearts of potential buyers just might increase sales.

Lucky I got mine at the reduced rate, as my Triumph one is working at the new price I probably would not have bought it, with shipping and inport taxes it pushes up to a "luxury" item as opposed to "Ill get one for a spare".

Good job MM and everyone involved! IMHO This is the one most important after market advancements to date fo our beloved T's I admit there was skepticism on my part early on as I spoke with Procom on many occasions a few years back when I had a complete CDI failure. But once again patience and perseverance pays off! One last comment to any of the moderators..... Can we place this in the tech vault? or pin it for easy access? Thanks again guy's/gal's

Hi all, I have a question. I emailed procom saying I would buy one and received an email back saying "come on down". Now I'm thinking, nothing's wrong with my current 05 Speedmaster unit "at the moment" so my question is:
How many of you guys have bought yourself one of these to replace the stock unit as a pre-emptive decision based on past performance stats ie. leaving you broke down or some such AND / OR, the procom cdi also offers other features?
They told me I could buy one for $200aud shipped but considering nothing has happened to the my stock unit, so why would I fork out for something that's not broke yet?
You know, if it's not broke why fix it?
Just interested in your thoughts on this one?

If I am being honest I bought mine because its a good deal compared to the Triumph ones, I also believe that mine is not quite right as if I hit the rev limiter it STOPS!!
Yep, the engine cuts out and when you hit the limiter its because your in a place you DONT want to break down.
My main tweak will be raising the rev limit by +500 RPM taking my max to 8000 RPM which should fix me up just fine, that and a small tweak to the timing and I think its well worth the money, and this way I can keep my Triumph one as a spare and if the Procomm one has a need to be returned Im still riding.
Theres a 2nd hand CDI on eBay now in the uk at 275 UKP so these Procomm ones even at the new price are excellent value..
Go get one, you know you want to, do it, go on, do it LOL

I've had one fail already so for me it will be cheap insurance against another failure; and, it will provide a secure feeling on a long range trip.

Many of the early 2002/2003 270° igniter's do that when you hit the rev limiter. If the most you rev to is say 7.8k and raise the rev limiter to 8k, it won't happen unless you hit the new 8k limit. It's a fault in the design of the early rev limiter and the only way round it is to keep the rev limit out of the way of where you're revving too.

At least now I HAVE an option to do something about it other than ride slower Just hope I can get a decent day so I can get the bike out and put the CDI unit on, then I need to spend a day working out if its better with or without the TPS connected.

I don't have a direct answer, but I do know many folks here stockpile parts due to limited availability of Triumph parts in general. To those of us with short riding seasons, a week or four can fairly ruin a Summer. I lost two months of riding last Summer - 4 weeks of that were due to incorrect parts shipments & parts availability issues. With a 6 & 1/2 months riding between road salt deployments, 2 months was a very very long time. I can usually squeak in 10 or 12,000 miles in 6 months. Last season I did 4 or 5,000.
To make a long story longer, if I had an extra $200 I'd buy an extra igniter. Money is a little tight right now though. My health insurance costs me $17,000 (not a typo - seventeen thousand) per year for two people, if you count in the $5,000 HSA deductible. That's around 4 months of wage for me.
(I'd want to believe the guy who came up with the HSA concept is the same guy who invented spring loaded bathroom sink faucets and blow driers instead of paper towels to dry your hands. May his days in He|| be especially 'warm.')

I hear ya brother. My procom CDI was ordered as a possible replacement. At the time I placed the order, Vera Lynn had a quirk (for years that got worse) that might have been an ignitor. Said quirk was just like a dirty idle circuit. I could ride anywheres from 1/8 throttle to ballstothewall with no hiccups. Then when starting off idle at say 1/8 throttle it may or may not hiccup. Jeez. Don’t lectrics get worse as the heat increases? Or as greater demands are placed on them? After pulling and cleaning the carbys twice Vera got a rip van winkle snooze. Fast forward about 20K miles and 7 months later on Cinnamon Girl. I finally got round to swapping Vera's CDI out with Cinnamon Girls. Ya got to hate it when ya never get winter shuttered eh? Never any time to wrench, only time to ride. The oem cdi swap out was a no fix me deal. Turn out it was a coil. A freaking coil! The last thing I checked. What was left? Given 78,500 miles on the Dame it is possible for the carbys to be flat wore out. While desirous of the hoppy beverages in the fridge, I proceeded to rejet some used carbys I bought from Second Wind Triumph. Looking to diagnosis worn out carbs. If the lectric swaps didn’t pan out. Weren’t we talking about inventory? Well an ignition coil in my inventory, one I bought waaaaaaay back on March 14, 2005 FINALLY came in handy. So immediately that relegated the procom CDI to Spare. Since the coil swap out Vera Lynn has rolled a couple hundred miles. Heading up to Daytona and the Land of Meyers, oops, not a bloody tool on me! Vera Lynn I know what has become of you. I got ya right tween me legs… I digress.
Now the procom CDI really is a spare. However grassloppers, I want to install the tinman heart and run it, and save the oem cdi in all its backing plate attached glory: Read immediate replacement when/if needed. And to make the procom cdi primary with no issues of backing plates, I placed this order today...

yep, I'll be able to swap out a CDI in 10 minutes. 3 minutes if Greg don't watch me.
Why 4 barbed rivets and not two? Well that gets back to the question at hand...
...Inventory.
Mine.
Speaking of I could kick my self in your rear end. I should have ordered some thruxton and tbs needles for said inventory.
P.S.: The black ones are faster. Even if they lack a certain dialect.
