You let the cat out of the bag Donny, I was going to surprise my Ga. rally friends!

I told Donny he is going to love it down there, he doesn't drink wine coolers like I do. Ha.

What sort of accomodations are available - camping? Showers? Cheap motels?

Argyle, I plan on camping at the Etowah River campground... not too far from Rally central. There are some hotel / motels in the area, but not sure about availability.

Thom I might be wrong, I sometimes am.

Try this. http://www.dahlonega.org/index.php/where-to-stay/motels.html The Days Inn is the rally motel where most people stay. I think it was a little over 50 during the week. Phone (706) 864-2338. Here is Thoms campground. http://www.etowahrivercampground.com/

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm thinking of going to the British In the Blue Ridge Rally June 11-13, which is just up the road from y'all in Hiawassee. I've always wanted to meander through Kentucky and Tennessee, so I was thinking about taking most of a week to get down there. Can't do that twice in a row, so if I come to this rally it will be dash down and dash back. I'm not a member of the IBA, and I'm not sure the old bones will stand up to an 800+ mile day. Knowing I can camp gives me the flexbility to take a few test runs and decide if I think I can manage 1600-1700 miles in 3-4 days.

Any of y'all planning on going to the Ozark RAT Raid in April?

Scene from the 19th Annual British in the Blue Ridge Rally (2004)

Scene from the 2004 Ga Rally

Doesn't help your decision on which one to attend this year, but Kansas City to Dahlonega is 700 miles of slab riding if you want to do it a day. With the last 80 miles or so from Dalton taking you at least 2 hours on GA Rt 52.

Are you one of the 5 people who has seen it? I heard that in the UK it had the 2nd worst opening in history, and took in about $130 total.

Hey Charles, good to hear from you...I was planning on staying at T.W.O. again Friday night anyway, but I really want to take my '72 T120 up to Blowing Rock for the annual 3 state ride sponsored by BritBike.com, and my bike needs ANOTHER back tire, so unfortunately, it's not looking good, as I have to decide between the two Rally's this year, as both are pretty close together. If things change, I'll try to be at T.W.O. Friday night...

What's up Chy. Been a long time.

I was pretty bummed I let myself miss last year; so I certainly plan to make it out this year. Count me +1 in least for at least Fri & Sat.

Not sure who the +1 will be yet but I've got a couple ideas ;-)

Any news on the routes yet?

Jake

Count me in. Just heard from Rob they can not make the rally but Rob and Lee and familes are heading south on the 30th of April and we have invited them to stop and stay the night here in GA.

Aaalllllrighty then... looks like we'd better get this thing rolling huh? I've not been quite as on top of things as I usually am.. too many irons in the fire and all that..but! here we go.

Officially it all starts Thursday and I have only three rides planned this year buuuuuuttt.. there will be shorter rides during the week and maps are available for ride suggestions for singles or groups. Those of you who have been here before know that the selection of scenic and very crooked roads is numerous and varied.

First of all, there are several road closures this year so those of you taking the scenic route might check on road closures before completing the planning of your route... there are closures on hwy's 129, 64 and 28. And I'm very sorry to say, Richard Russell Parkway is closed as well. It seems that the highway department is concerned that the road bed has been compromised which could lead to the pavement sliding off. No info on reopening except sometime maybe in June or ?.
There now, you got that piece of info for free... it cost me $125. Reckon it's illegal to drive on a closed road and though it's a state highway in Union(?) county I was issued a federal citation by the local Rabbit Sheriff for driving on a closed road. Along with I suspect, many, many other people like me who said, "Huh!?! I wonder why the roads closed.. lets go see!". I'm sure the feds made a tidy little profit as they wrote up 3 guys on bikes while we were there and saw many more headed that way on our trek back down. Yes we tried to warn them but no one seemed to care... anyway...

Okay Thursday.. I'd really like to take the day to do Cherohala.. I have a couple of options that can be discussed by the group but whatever the route we'll meet at Chevron north ( North of town on the left just past the high school and Ace hardware.) kickstands up at 0900 headed north. Dinner in town that night, probably at the mex place.

Friday we'll do Fort Mountain, it's been awhile and I really love that section of 52.. those sweeet deep sweepers are calling me but I'll not go.. not without you folks. 0900 Chevron south, kickstands up headed west. Friday evening is tech night for all you tinkerers and order in pizza night.

Saturday... is going to be an interesting and seldom used run of a series of choice stretches of road leading to lunch in Blairsville and 17 to Helen for the return trip. We'll probably drop in on our local bike shop for motorsickleogling and must-have items, he prodded us with free biscuits and stuff last year so I'll see what I can do.
That night we'll eat, drink and tell stories till we're sated, for Sunday we will part.... unless you hang around, then you can come along on our Sunday morning breakfast ride.

Again...
Chevron South: Hwy 9 and Auraria
Chevron north: North from Dahlonega on 19 past the high school and Ace hardware.

Till then..

Meaning I need to take the Garmin mount, sae battery supply cable, and audio cable off of Cinnamon Girl and place it on Vera Lynn. Yup. The Dame is going on a road trip. Her last one was March 2009 when she got up to Dahlonega then on another given Sunday in March, up to Woodbridge VA.

Lean and mean.

Well, I guess I should say something. It has been awhile, that is for sure. Belinda the Tiger will be ready, but I am not sure that I will be this year. If so it will be the shortest visit since 2005, like leave Wednesday and back to Florida Sunday. Just thought I would say "hi," and that I am still alive and wishing we were all together more often.

Ride safe everyone.

What route are you taking from Tulsa? I'm thinking taking a couple of days to get to Dahlonega - heading straight south from KC to northern Arkansas then east on whatever blue highways look like the most fun. Maybe we could meet up somewhere along the route and ride the last half together.

Anyone else from the KC area considering going? Jayhawk?

I am taking I-40 E. across Ok/Ark. to Memphis, then US 64 across the bottom of Tenn ( nice scenery), then I-24 through Chatanooga then turn left in Dalton.Ga on 52 to Dahlonega. We are going to try and do most of the trip on Tuesday May 5th and then have about 4 1/2 hours left to do on Wed. the 6th to get there early Wednesday to rest and hang out to be "fresh" for the big ride on Thursday. We could meet up in Ft. Smith. that wouldn't be a bad ride from KC, but there is nothing to see on I-40.

to get there early Wednesday to rest and hang out to be "fresh" for the big ride on Thursday.

So things really get started on Thursday? I was thinking about traveling on Wed+Thur and rolling in Thursday evening, but this kind of sounds like an all-week rally instead of the typical week-ender. I put 400 break-in miles on the T-Bird last Sunday and was plumb tuckered out when I got home, so I'm not sure how long and hard of days the old bones are up to. KC to Ft Smith is about 300 miles, plus whatever you plan to cover that day. OTOH, KC to Memphis via US 63 is only about 2 more hours than Tulsa to Memphis, according to Google Maps.

Decisions, decisions, decisions
dither, dither, dither,

How far beyond Memphis do you plan on going on Tuesday? What time you plan to hit the road? I might try to get a head start on you and catch up with you in Memphis, but I'm not sure that the old bod, soft from a winter on my butt, is up for an enduro ride.
