Those bars are going to look bad azz on that bike... That bike visit day sounds awesome. I'd like to show up for that too but that would be a long trip. Sounds like an awesome mini rally. Keep up the posts and good work!!!

Tentative paint scheme for tank top. 'Entwined wolves.' Got this from a book by Lora S. Irish. The front page says copies may be made for personal use. I imagine that covers me against copyright infraction but will have to check further. Metallic brass paint. Gas cap will be centered in heart shaped area below the two heads. [image] [/image]

That's going to be one fine chopper. Why did you go with a hardtail instead of a softail? what's the rake, stretch and down tube. What size tubing did you use. I used a 6 up and 4 inch strech with a 40 degree rake on a softail frame. Just curious.....Angelis

Man, that's one sweet old chop, Dog. Me likey! Angelis, I went with a hardtail cuz I'm old school & personally, I just think they look better than a softy. As far a frame specs, to quote the Tigman, "It's a chopper from ******. 6" up - 6" out - 6" rear." 45 degree rake. 2" neck stock, 1 1/2" backbone & downtube, main frame is 1 1/4". He's putting the forward control mounts on today & waiting for the machined pocket mounts for the gas tank. If they don't show by Thursday latest, he'll fab 'em up himself. He told me to keep in touch towards the end of the week as he'll probably be finishing up, so I should have this baby in my basement by Monday evening latest. Here's a couple of more pics: [image] [/image]

I was hoping you'd bring this up again. Can you even pipe up the new engines like this?

I don't know why you'd bother. But I've been thinking about (instead of your battery bracket idea) getting a chopper-style battery box/oil bag combo to mount the battery and hide the wiring. Others have done it on our bikes but they've always been either one-offs or adapted aftermarket Harley stuff.

Ya' know, I've been thinking about this since you first brought it up & have come to the conclusion that you're 100% correct. (Did I mention somewhere that I'm just learning to wrench???) The few Hinckley chops I've managed to find online had oil tanks, like this one: http://www.knucklebusterinc.com/features/2008/03/03/new-choppahed-modern-triumph-photo-gallery/...so I just assumed. No problem though. I can either modify it for some electrics as you were saying or use it on my '71 once I start tearing that apart.

Sorry, I thought you already had a plan for it, especially since you are planning on plating it to match the bike.

The reason I haven't bought an aftermarket oilbag/battery box for my wiring/battery is they aren't cheap. At least not the ones that look decent. I'm not hacking up a $200-300 bracket.

My bud & I were talking about it. He suggested cramming some electrics in there then running the wiring thru the braided oil lines. I like that idea but it'll be much easier to visualize when it's downstairs & not in Boston. I'll figure something out.

Thompson, the rigid frame is the way is the way I should have gone but my back has seen better days. I had to weld the shock mounts for the softail shocks and find a place to weld the rear engine mount(I didn't want a seat post) plus cut out the the stock Harley front motor nount so I could move my engine forward. Did you do anthing to the engine?

Yeah Thompson you might wanna look at those oil tanks that hold the battery as well as the electronics. This way everythings in one place, and you dont have to run wires up and back from the bottom frame rails. I assume thats where the battery would be?

On this point mate, I am in the middle of doing the battery relocation. I have just mounted a 1970's triumph custom octagonal oil tank. Its partly to put some of the wiring in and partly to fill the gap a bit. If it looks okay am looking at adapting one to hold the battery as well next year. I'll put some pics on when I can get into the garage in daylight. Cheers Chris

No Angelis, I've not done anything to the engine but do intend to pop off the covers & make sure everything is hunky dory before it goes into the frame. At this time, I've no plans on modifying it.
Brokenfixed, that's where the battery was going to go alright. Lemme see what I can find to work around this.

gimmer, be sure to check the clearance of the chain in relation to the bottom of the oil tank. Ive heard of another member "larkfarms" trying to mount a mini keg underneath and the chain needed to be accounted for. You might have to cut out a notch for the chain. I think it wasnt a problem until weight was put on the suspension in normal driving situations. Of course it depends on how big the tank is. Just a thought, before you have anything painted..haha

Good thinking, thanks for that headsup, I'll check that again when I can get into the garage without falling flat on my butt, again.

Hey there Mountainman. I had originally planned to go just black and brass, but there's only a very limited selection of brass parts out there & some of 'em are ridiculously expensive. Too much to make it worth it. Copper is readily available - ya' gotta do what ya' gotta do...
I got the roters on Ebay from a seller called 'Chopshop1 motorcycle parts' for $110.00 with shipping.
if i could get my head round how to post pics on this site id show u a handmade brass Viking "Vegvisir" that Mon's dad created for her in his w/shop...fits into th tacho hole in th dash...hang on, i'l give this pic thingo a go..
