My stock shocks and my GFs (she has an America as well) were both too bouncy. The 412s were ok but they would have been better with the heavy duty springs. I had the adjustment on the 412s maxed and I was still bottoming out and feeling too much spring in turns and bumps. The 440s differ in the valving and the way they work. The Progressive Suspension web site is a better resource for what differs the 412, 418 and 440s.
When I added my 440s and adjusted them the bounce was gone, the dip into turns was controlled and made me feel better about the handling of my bike.
Oh...going from the lowered 412 to standard 440 also stopped my pipe scraping.
