Don't know anything about satellite TV, but I recently ditched our Comcast cable box in favor of the lowest tier of cable service to save $30 a month.
(I'll sorely miss HBO / Alan Ball's **"True Blood" and a few others, but so it goes.)
I did learn one thing - one TV in the house is late model, and gets the decimal type signals - 3.1 and like that. The Comcast decimal channels have the HD stuff. The older TV can't get the decimal stuff. A "QAM" type tuner is required for the decimal channels. The aftermarket is nearly devoid of standalone QAM tuner boxes. Guess the market for cheap skates like me who won't buy a new TV if only for the QAM is too thin?

The theme song alone was almost worth the price of HBO
