one thing to remember about any communications: The govment adds close to 35% once all is said and done. I dropped Direct TV last April. They raised my rates right after I dropped a receiver. For basic service and local channels I was paying $73.53 per month. No movies no sports nada f n thing other than tv shows fraught with loud commercials. AND no HD feeds either. Now I get HD for free. UHF antennas are cheap.
They will rope you in with great rates for one yr then slam you since you have to sign a two year contract. Bend over, they are ready for you...

Strange name given that it's really just streaming video over your computer.. I have satellite TV and get several hundred channels for free, including many that are not offered on the conventional pay satellite services. For a couple hundred bucks, you can get a pretty good Ku band setup (stb, 36" dish, motor and lnb) and never have to pay a penny for programming again.
Cheers, Brad

Is this what is referred to as a "Free to Air" set up?

90% of stuff on tv is crap anyhow. Toss the set out the window, take the cable money saved and make a payment on another bike.

I ditched my cable TV and watch anything I want except one program online. Big Bang Theory is the only show I can't find without resorting to torrents (I'll just wait for it on DVD with Netflix). I watch Hulu and a lot of Netflix stuff over my Xbox. Upgraded my cable internet to super-duper high speed for $66/mo. I was paying $135 total with internet and TV (digital with PVR). Overall, though, I just watch less TV.

I tried Cable, absolute rubbish. Been with Direct TV for years, absolutely brilliant. Got over 100 channels but I only care about two of them. Fox Soccer channel and Setanta Sports (Soccer). Between the two I haven't missed an Arsenal game all season. $70 per month and worth every single penny. Up the Gunners

I should add that it's nearly impossible to find reliable online sports broadcasting.

I don't know guys. Sure TV can be numbing... which has it's place after making it through yet another day in this world of swine flu, economic collapse, war on terrorism, climate change, cost of fuel cigs booze and food, health care worries, social reform, weather, 2012, corruption and taking out the garbage but then again TV just feeds all those worries and woes (well, except for taking out the garbage). Hmmmm...there may be other ways to fill the void... like learning guitar, riding (stating the obvious), working on the bike, hangin 'out on this here forum, or any number of other things that one might find interesting or stimulating.
Of course the option of hangin' out here and trying to keep up with all the intellectual prowess, whit, creativity and technical know how could possibly break a man (or woman)... some o' you might want to keep the TV.
Anyway, I pulled the plug on TV a few months ago. It was a bit like quitting smoking... there were withdrawals, just not extreme. I am a better man for it because I now have time to do things for myself which stimulate my intellect.
But if ya watch TV I ain't got no judgment 'bout that. Just stating what worked for me and my forefathers. It is not that TV rots yer brain, it's just that it pickles it. Hey, if ya like head cheese... carry on!!!!
Live to love, love to live.

Don't know anything about satellite TV, but I recently ditched our Comcast cable box in favor of the lowest tier of cable service to save $30 a month. (I'll sorely miss HBO / Alan Ball's **"True Blood" and a few others, but so it goes.) I did learn one thing - one TV in the house is late model, and gets the decimal type signals - 3.1 and like that. The Comcast decimal channels have the HD stuff. The older TV can't get the decimal stuff. A "QAM" type tuner is required for the decimal channels. The aftermarket is nearly devoid of standalone QAM tuner boxes. Guess the market for cheap skates like me who won't buy a new TV if only for the QAM is too thin? ````````````````````````````````````````` ** The theme song alone was almost worth the price of HBO

I am a Dish Network fan. I get 250 (80 something are in HD) cable channels, 6 local channels, and around 200 Music channels, with 2 receivers feeding 3 TV's for $100. I don't have the movie channels, but use Netflix for shows like True Blood.

The first 13 years out on my own, I didn't own a tv. Period. Really. A few years after VHS came out, I finally broke down and bought a tv and a player. Watched about one movie a week. A few years later, a huge deal came my way on a near new, 57 inch giant tv. I foolishly bought it as too good of a deal to pass up. I say foolishly, cause I started thinking... "as long as I have this big tv, I probably could hook it to an antennae to get a few channels. Dumbest thing I ever did. My wife (bless her) spends most hours in the evening and some in the morning watching it. And to be honest, it sucks me in for about two hours a night. Mostly Jay Leno or a PBS show. Before the "brain sucker", I did a lot of woodworking and wrenching on my antique machinery. I'd think of some way of unhooking it, and saying it is just broke, but my wife is too smart for that. I'm just glad I have this site to occupy my valuable time instead of the brain sucker.
