I would say more owners in the UK us motorcycles as their primary source of transportation. Also a sport bike is easier to filter (split the lane) with during those morning and afternoon commutes.

When I was in London in 2005 I don't remember seeing anything other than sport bikes, and there were lots of them. Motorcycles back then didn't have to pay the 5 pound fee for driving in London like anyone in a car did.
