Well as I have told many guys , it is always a good idea to turn the petcock off as a ritual everytime you turn the key off. I turn the gas off then the key every time and the reverse when starting. The gas could be from a stuck float or little dirt in the needle valve for the float. I would check your oil to be sure it doesn't smell like gas. If that intake valve was open and gas went down into the cyl. it could then get past the rings and into your oil. Even if you had a bad float turning the gas off when turning the bike off will prevent a problem. It won't fix the bad float but it will stop gas getting places it shouldn't
