Due to the high cost of OEM parts in Australia I decided to try and find alternative parts suppliers overseas who had an online database of prices. Bike is a 2004 Speedmaster.

Unfortunately, I could only find one with prices online. (Bike Bandit) I always wondered where the name came from.

Check out the following, (If you are an Australian buyer) I don’t know what happens in other countries.

Comments please, from other international buyers would be interesting.

I searched for prices of parts that I have had to source in the past.

What I am trying to say is that when buying from Bike Bandit take a good look at the add ons before you buy.

Item Price Tax Shipping Total

Camshaft Spring (2) $9.74 $1.94 $79.07 $90.75

Starter Motor $858.22 $171.64 $79.07 $1108.93

Clutch Lever $26.49 $6.30 $79.07 $111.86

Rear Master Cylinder $229.29 $45.90 $79.07 $354.26

I actually rang Bike Bandit to query the Tax & Duty component and was told that is what UPS factor into their invoice charges.

I think this is rather strange as under the current Australian rules, goods imported into the country with a value under A$1000 do not attract any duty or GST. When I mentioned this to the 2 people at Bike Bandit, their remarks were the same “that’s the way it is’’.

I have bought from New Bonneville & Fasteddy & other suppliers in the past and found their shipping charges to be very fair and no tax added at their end. If my memory serves me correctly the shipments from the USA were by USPS.

If I buy anything from a supplier in the UK, they deduct the VAT that residents pay from the item cost as it is a shipment going outside the European Union.

I also found Bike Bandits shipping charges very high if you bought cheaper priced items. On a good note they would ship all of the above items in one shipment for $79.07.

If there are any employees of UPS on this forum in the right capacity, your comments would be very welcome.

I have also posted this on other forums.

I would be willing to ship stuff to you guys down under (and have already) if you want to have it sent to my house and pay shipping, I'll take it to the post office and have it sent and fill out the customs forms so it goes as a gift or whatever... just let me know

I bought from B.B They charged individual postage prices and put them all in 1 box. And charged like a wounded bull. I saw the postage on the box and it was far less than what they charged me. I was pleased to get the stuff, at reasonable prices, but I got ripped with the postage. I bought from another site, B.A. and paid only actual charges. All sent airmail, which is fine if it is not cost prohibitive. Im wondering what snail mail would cost. Its great guys like Roadworthy are willing to assist. Cheers Mate. If you ever get down this way you have a place to stay.

I buy a lot of radio controlled airplane stuff from the good ol' USofA and I refuse to buy from vendors that demand either UPS or FedEx. I understand that for domestic stuff those two are much faster and more reliable but for overseas stuff they charge (as mentioned) like wounded bulls, and considering all UPS/FedEx do is deliver to their local airport it's ridiculous. Find a dealer that'll use USPS (United States Postal Service) instead and spend a few bucks on insurance in case it gets lost.

Not exactly bike related, but thread related... annoyingly USPS has a size limit on their international parcels that's about 3 inches shorter than the average RC plane kit. If I'm buying planes (rather than smaller parts) from overseas I'd go through a Canadian dealer as their postal service is a bit more generous when it comes to size.

HOLY ....!!! $801 ???!!!

Wow! I don't care if that's 801AUD or USD, which isn't all that much different anymore!

That sure sounds like a ripoff for sending something like a gastank that what, weights about 30 or 40 pounds, alright!

(hmmmmm....ya know, I wonder if maybe it costs more to send stuff Down Under 'cuz there's some kind'a surcharge that goes to help keepin' the wombats away from the packages once they arrive down there or somethin'?...hey, I'm just tryin' to figure this thing out here, that's all!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Hey Boof, If you work for Australia Post (Or should that be paid by AustraliaPost) it means you are semi retired.

Uh huh Frank, all well and good there alright, BUT what I really wanna know here is...whenever an Aussie postal worker goes berserk at work down there, do YOU GUYS then say he "went TOTALLY wombat"???

(once again, just tryin' to figure this whole thing out, that's all!)

somewhat related...anyone have experience shipping bikes to Oz? I'm in the process of having a bike sent down there for a buddy. Long story short, this Aussie w/dreadlocks stopped me about a year ago to talk about my bike. After a couple beers he said he and his family were on a 4 month holiday and he was planning to buy a bike while here. He went to get a HD in Milwaukee and ended up at Cook's Customs where he bought the Nikki Bike. He's just now going to have it disassembled and should be sent within a week or so. I'll let you know what sort of customs broker nightmare it will be! Apparently the bike isn't legal there for several reasons. Any thoughts?

Here's the Cook's site.

I am semi retired frank , only go to work 5 hours a day
Going "wombat" for a postie would be using far to much energy that could otherwise be used for eating lunch or smoko , we are a very placid lot here
Over here our posties deliver the mail on Honda motorbike,s

Dont do it - its not worth it, numerous costs work out to thousands of dollars, Example - steam cleaning by customs $800.

Thanks x58! Great info. It looks tricky if not impossible.
