Well, they're at it again. Here in Iowa, legislation is going to be introduced to make Taverns liable/responsible for fights or attacks that happen outside their bars, such as in the parking lot. It seems that there have been some serious attacks on people in recent years, and it is the bar owners fault. They served the perpetrators of these attacks alcohol. (imparing their judgment) (huh, ya think!?)A similar law was introduced and defeated last year. Personal responsibility is now offically dead. And the funny thing is, there doesn't seem to be that many mourners. Maybe it's because we all want to secretly have "our chance" to get rich quick from an insurance co. settlement, hopefully in the near future. Heeeeeey, I just thought of something. My fingers are hurting lately, probably from punching on this keypad nearly every day, to, you know, post things like this. It's not MY fault that this site is so darned interesting. And the return riposte's are so much fun. It's YOUR DARN FAULT. NOW I'M GONNA HAVE TO THINK ABOUT SUING THIS SITE! OWWW, OW! OW! Those caps really hurt! I'm gonna sign off for a little bit now, so I can call my "counciler".

(...oh AND BTW...you sure are the little instigator 'round here lately aren't cha, you little elevator-designer/trouble-maker you?!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I hear what you are saying Rich but consider that a tavern owner who doesnt act responsibly and keeps serving alcohol to people who are obviously way over the limit is making money from them until closing time where they then launch them out onto the streets where trouble ensues and then the people who have to clean up the mess are the police and ambulance crews who are paid for by your taxes.

Not to mentin cleaning the streets up of vomit and broken bottles and glasses and the like, which comes from municipal funds I would guess which i figure you would be paying into also.

Over here the authorities will revoke a publicans licence if the police report numerous incidents of trouble outside a pub but to be honest they really need to be doing a bit more to make troublesome establishments clean up their act.

I agree though that it should be down to the individual to act responsibly but then what is acting responsible when you have had a few beers?

Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

Well Graham, that all depends on the person, doesn't it?! As I'm sure you know, there are "Happy Drunks" who when filled with the suds create a "good time" and can have the others around them just laughin' up a storm and enjoying themselves!

And THEN, once again as I'm sure you know, there are the "Mean Drunks" who because of some deep-seeded anti-social STUPID-AZZ emotional problems tend to be lookin' for those fights out there where those suds are served.

BUT, because I've recently read in another of Rich's thread around here containing the following quote by our own Mr. Larry Disney....

Quote:

The most basic of human rights is the right to do things others think are stupid.

...I'm now a convert!!! Yep, 'cuz evidently "freedom" means that those tavern owners should have the right to serve their hooch TO those "STUPID-AZZ Mean Drunks" out there to as much as they feel "free" to do it AND without any repercusions later!!!

(yep Rich...you want "controversy" 'round here?...you've GOT IT, ol' buddy!!!)

Okay Dave, it's a deal!!!

(but don't worry, I can't recall the last time I couldn't defend myself either verbally OR by method of "the alternative" in such a situation...nowdays of course I make all asserted attempts at utilizing the former option, as I'm presently at an age where not ONLY am I better equiped to use that particular option, but the latter option nowdays would probably require a longer recuperative time than it did back when I was a mite younger!)

For those of us voting for that odd but somehow logical concept of SELF RESPONSIBILITY, I nominate "Get Over It" by the Eagles for our theme song!

Sure, Graham, I get what you're sayin. But I'm sayin that personal responsibility trumps Tavern liability. After all, no tavern forces their clientelle to drink. We are on a slippery slope here. How about we hold the booze makers responsibile too. After all, cigarette makers are losing lawsuites right and left for selling a dangerous product. And while we're at it, let's sue the bottle manufacturers too, cause they are supplying the vehicle that the booze is being transported in. And how about the trucking companies, which..... I would bet the lawyer associations are supporting this bill, behind the scenes. They are gonna be the one's who are gonna profit the most, milking money from the big, bad, (deep pockets) insurance companies, who supply liability policies for the tavern owners. And by the way, Iowa is a state where there are already "dram laws", wherin a tavern owner can be sued for the actions of the patrons who cause a car accident after becoming legally drunk at their establishment. It's been on the books for a lot of years now, and I was against it from the start. And as a further aside, I am not a drinker, with a couple of beers with friends a year being my usual habit.

Yeah, I am gettin a little onery around here, aren't I. But I can't start the "trials" for my elevator designs until, and if, I start a new house next year, so I guess I'm a little bored. Even then, I'm having a hard time finding any test passengers!

I was one of those guys that would just punch the guy next to me for no reason at all when drunk. That's why I quit drinking 23 years ago. On my trip to VA this past summer I had a couple specialty dark beers because I always loved dark beer and wanted to try these. First I had in all that time. Now I have 1 beer a night on a couple nights a week after work and no more. I really enjoy Newcastle Brown Ale, was my choice 23 years ago too.

I hear ya Ian. Not too long ago me and some friends got well nigh lit at a local tavern, then had a spot of trouble in the parking lot on the way out. It turned into a brawl, with the three of us eventually kicking the living snot out of a guy. Yeah, I kinda feel bad that it was three on one...
