I was dinking around yesterday putting into action something I wanted to try.I removed the front fender and bracket, rear brake fluid res cover, and the chain cover.I wanted to paint them all red as a compliment to my all black bike.I did that and they looked great so I decided I should enamel clear coat them this morning.I did that too, awwwww crap! The finish went immediatly to gator skin.I dont know what the heck happened, maybe the clear coat was too cold in the can.In any case, now I gotta blast/sand that crap off and start again.

Sounds like the clearcoat has re-acted with the paint. Had it happen to me once with a two-pack topcoat over a cellulose base.

Rub down and start again !!

Yep - sure sounds like it. Color & clear from the same maker and of the same type would be a good idea. Duplicolor or a similar automotive type brand would be good. I bought some pearlescent spray paint from these folks - http://www.automotivetouchup.com
and it was a perfect match.

I don't think paint temperature was an issue here, but warming up rattle cans in warm water can be helpful, but do not get them hot. Wash your hands water temp is good. Too hot and the spray nozzles can blow out. (Been there - done dat)

When you do the clearcoat layer, try to lay on a wet coat(s). This will help reduce orange peel, although white compounding or 1,000 grit wet sanding between coats wouldn't hurt either.

A very bright hand held light (halogen) can help to get it to wet state application without candling.

That the nice thing about painting - you can almost always "go back in time" so to speak and fix it. Welding, drilling, sawing on the other hand...

Painting trivia fact #1312 - it is a near impossibility to paint outside of a dust free booth and get a dust free job. Yes, I know about watering down the floor and this and that, but still - dust is pretty much everywhere in the air, especially if there is a finish what needs applying. If anyone notices dust in your paint job, they need to get a life anyway.

As a pretty good ametuer, I never mix and match paint brands, even to primers. Always use the same company of paints unless you're a pro and have tried everything else.

They were both the same manufacture.Only one of the parts looked good when I actually sprayed the clear but even it went ugly before it dried.Ill take them to work ,blast them and try it again.Until then,I think I like the looks of the bike without the fender or chain guard.I might just put a protective primer on them and leave them off.I swear, the more things I take off this bike the better I like her,ba and se bonnys sure do look good naked!
