here we go again.I believe that the general consenesus is that if you have 2 "T"s in your vin number it was "assembled" in Thailand,2"J"s It was assembled at Hinckley

Okay Gary, here's the deal....
Your buddy needs to EITHER buy a World Atlas, OR he needs to sign up for a remedial course in GEOGRAPHY at his local cummunity college(like most americans, it seems), OR he needs to concentrate a little better when people tell him things...because...what he SHOULD have told ya is that most of the Triumph air-cooled Twins, since around 2006, are now ASSEMBLED in ThaiLAND, NOT TaiWAN!!!
(yep...geesh...here we go again!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

After the SMT you should have either 2 Js or 2 Ts mixed in with the numbers. The last time i was at my local dealership all of the 2009 bikes with the 865 i looked at had the 2 Ts in the vin,the T-bird did have the 2 Js,and I read somewhere that the T-bird was currently only being produced at the Hinckley plant, which lends credence to the Js or Ts method of distinguishing where the bikes are assembled.

About 2 years ago, I was wandering around a shopping mall in Sriracha, Thailand. I was there for about 6 weeks on business. When I went up to the 3rd or 4th floor, I came across a recruiting drive for the Triumph factory, which was undergoing a large expansion. They had posters explaining the expansion, job descriptions, and 3 bikes on display (Speedmaster, Rocket and I forget the 3rd bike (not America)). Like all large displacement engine bikes in Thailand, all 3 bikes are heavily taxed in country, interestingly enough. This is to promote the smaller engine (<500 cc) bikes/scooters. Anyway, they were impressed that I had an America (they called it something else, like a code) and we had a nice chat about bike assembly, loudness (Bubs vs stock pipes) and the Thunderbird. I did take/post before some pictures, if interested. I can try and re-post them. Mebbe your friend was thinking of Harleys???
Blue/White 2007 TBA, Thruxton needles, Unifilter, AI removed, Polaris Bellmouth, Bubs, Nology Coils/wires, Lightbar, Ricor Intiminators, Hagon Nitros, Tall Sissy Bar w/luggage rack, Dart flyscreen & Lowers. 130 Mains, TrueGel Battery MG12-BS.

Well , Harley ownes a Chinese MFG ( own may not be the word in a communist country) and MANY of the parts for their bikes are made there.. BUT their bikes are still assembled in the U.S. ..... While I'm glade my "Brit Bikes" were all "assembled" in the UK there are several parts "out-sourced" from other countries , In todays economy with government regulation and taxation it is sad that forces many "icon" companies to leave their country of origin for labor in a less taxing and regulated environment.... My bikes regardless . (imo) carry the Hinckley badge and the Triumph name that has been handed down since Coventry , heck , even back then Triumph licensed bikes to be made in....Germany !
