I had lust in my heart for the Droid but after reading a few reviews I think it might be better to wait for version 2. The most common complaint is the slide-out keyboard's keys are very mushy. (Although all reviewers admit that you can use the on-screen touch keyboard to work around that.)
One reviewer said that the HTC Droid Eris was a better device than the Motorola Droid. Slightly smaller screen, on a par with the iPhone's, but the keys work better and it still runs the Android operating system (although version 1.5, while the Mot runs 2.0.)
Another common complaint about Android phones in general was that the iPhone has 100,000 apps in its app store while Android has only 10,000. If you've ever looked at the crud that people pawn off as apps in the Apple store, you'd probaby conclude that this is a non-issue.
I want an Android phone so I can write my own programs for it. I have the tools to do iPhone programming but I want to stick with Verizon as a carrier. But my first Android device will probably be Barnes & Noble's ebook reader, the Nook. (No, I don't know who comes up with these names.) With the Nook I can load PDF files of my shop manuals and take them with me out to the driveway.
