A Jap Harley? You must have missed the part about it having a parallel twin there, Lenny. Last time I visited a Harley, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki or Yamaha dealership there were v-twin cruisers as far as the eyes could see... Heck with it, I give up.
True Paul...EXCEPT that when you visited your local Kawasaki dealer that day, you must've evidently missed seein' THIS particular water-cooled parallel twin cruiser HERE...the Kawasaki Vulcan 500...OR, as I sometimes call it, "The "BABY Triumph T-Bird"!!!

(oh, and yeah...this Baby Triumph T-Bird here WOULD look a little better IF it would've had FINS on ITS cylinder barrels TOO!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

some of you sounds just like the guys....back in 2002 when I got my TBA ...
"look at that tank it look like a harley tank" "that rear fender looks like it off a harley" "that triumph looks like a jap harley"...
and this was said about the TBA back when it came out in 2002..
Ed
Uh huh Ed, and THATS very true too....EXCEPT that those folks who said that first quote evidently never saw the gastank of a early Triumph SPEED TWIN, and so I've never put much stock in what those folks have to say who have little or no sense of motorcycling's HISTORY, ya know.
Okay, I'll grant that second quote a little credence about the rear fender. They might have a point there...MAYBE!
(...and that third quote HAD to come to ya via folks who would be considered even less knowledgable about the topic at hand, of course!)

For those who have them, how many miles per gallon/miles per tank do you get out of the Thunderchicken?
Umm right - OK.
So you're one of those people who wouldn't want - for example - a fancy sports car because it uses too much fuel!
Lets face it - this type of bike is going to be used (in 99% of all cases) for a great 'A to A' ride. Enjoy - Experience and HAVE FUN. If you want a bike for commuting 'A to B to A' with great economics, then get a scooter or better still - stay with your bicycle!
But to give you an honest answer - my 209 Thunderbird 1600 Efi uses (5.2 ltr/100km) around 1 liter per 100 km more than my 2008 Speedmaster 900 EFi (4.38 ltr/100km) - which is about the same as my 1994 Tiger 900.
Eh, just ignore the nay-sayers here. They've said it all over and over and over, ad nauseum (Though I think that was just an honest question about a particular part of the overall performance, knowing the range is important).
What I would like, since you're in Switzerland and perhaps have done some Alpine riding, is your opinion and evaluation of the handling of the Thunderbird

Yes,a good comparative review from someone who lives/rides in the Alps would definitly have a good view of the handling, which was the original point.

And actually I would like to hear from someone who has BOTH a T-bird and an America/Speedy with upgraded suspension and can make a direct comparison.

Have a look here:- http://www.triumphrat.net/cruisers-thunderbird/122880-america-vs-thunderbird.html Quite a few Speedy and BA owners with opinions. John
Thanks, but I've already been through that thread, there are couple of posts worthwhile but most are I used to have/now i have which don't do much for direct comparison.Heck everything feels better when it's brand new(girlfriends/cars/motorcycles)I want someone's honest evaluation who can do what Fasteddy did with the Progressive shocks, basically ride the T-bird,park it get on a Speedy/America with upgraded suspension and make an honest comparison.

Well Jake there's this one, from a guy that's got both and I gather he's got upgraded suspension on the BA. ------------------------------------------------------ I have a 2008 America and a 2009 Thunderbird. Here are my cons for the America. One disc up front. When riding other bikes and switching back to the America, you really notice how weak front braking is. Stock fork springs are way too soft. A slight tap of the weak front brake and the forks dip. Get these replaced with progressive for a much better ride. Rear springs are way too soft. Go down a moderately bumpy road and you are continuously bottoming the springs. Progressive 440's were the perfect replacement. OEM bags suck. The throw-over saddles mark the paintwork on the rear mudguard. They are also too small to be practical and really don't do the bike justice. The indicators located on the handlebars? Please, this is a cruiser. I had a friend make me an adapter so I could relocate the indicators to the light bar. The America lacks power on tap. This could be fixed with a big bore kit or getting some of those mad yanks who bore bonnies out to 1200cc to fix it - who knows? It lacks power! With these all fixed, and with these items only, the America can hold its own against the Thunderbird. The America can also out corner a Thunderbird. With the aftermarket suspension, it takes a lot longer for you to grind the exhausts (after you have worn away the hero pegs - that is). I have put 20,000 miles on my America in 14 months and only 500 miles on my Thunderbird since purchase. If you have the money, you could get either providing you can resolved the "cons". The sensible money is on the Thunderbird __________________ http://axia.org.uk/downloads/Photos/...nderbird-3.jpghttp://axia.org.uk/downloads/Photos/...ddlebags-1.jpg --------------------------------------------------------- You've got to accept that many of us are delusional about the bikes we own ( whether it's a T-Bird, Speedy or BA or whatever ). Lots of us think our current machine is better than another model. That's what makes the world go round, our differences. Even if you find a bunch of riders with the upgrades you mention to report on their opinion of the Bird you're still going to get different reports. The only opinion that matters is yours at the end of the day mate. Try the T-Bird yourself and be sure to let us know what YOU think, I'm interested in your opinion, but if I decide to get one it'll be based solely on my opinion. John

the Kawasaki Vulcan 500...OR, as I sometimes call it, "The "BABY Triumph T-Bird"!!! OMG! They did a better job at making a bike look like a Thunderbird to look like a Harley than Triumph did.

Why is it that people tend to generalize, or attempt to fit everyone into their perceived categories? How about option three wiseguy. IĆ¢ā¬ā¢m looking for the perfect touring bike. I always look at mileage, have investigated auxiliary fuel tanks, and am tired of whatever formula manufacturers use to determine that 150 miles per tank with a 40 mile flux is an industry standard.

WOW! It is amazing that you can read my mind and see things that even I didnĆ¢ā¬ā¢t know! Jeez, IĆ¢ā¬ā¢m looking for another job because I thought I needed money to pay my bills, but perhaps that too is a secondary reason to some ulterior motive. You know I used to really enjoy riding my bike to work, but since I have to take my car so IĆ¢ā¬ā¢ll have a decent place to sit and eat my lunch my bike isnĆ¢ā¬ā¢t feasible. But, Ć¢ā¬Ā¦ perhaps I just want a clean place to sit and eat as an excuse to find a job making more money.
With all of the mind readers around here it seems someone would be right occasionally.

Thanks, any time I can send somebody over the rails like that it puts a big smile on my face! But so everyone is clear I don't hate the T-bird,there are a few things that I have mentioned previuosly that I don't like, all styling save the radiotar, and I have purchased every motorcycle magazine that has printed a review on it,for instance Ironhorse Magazine issue 126 page 41"The Thunderbird is very well planted and handles better than most bikes IN THIS CLASS",or Motorcyle Cruiser August 2009 page 28 "If it successfully staddles its siblings in the motor department,it only emulates the lighter cruisers in handling."Should it be cruiser of the year?Absolutley,it's better than every other cruiser to come out this year,Would I like to ride one, yes.Does it outhandle a Speedy/America with upgraded suspension?as soon my dealer let's me test ride one I'll know for myself. My Speedy is the light, sleek, sexy wife I love to show off,the T-bird is the fat girl I would like ride on the side for fun! Oh and everyone should commend themselves on aggravating each other so much that they are talking about us on other forums.

Yep Jake, in a nutshell...ride it and then decide for yourself. And yep again...I have to say that your topic heading sure DID grab a whole lot of attention here, AND evidently over on the Thunderbird1600 forum too, didn't it?! And, once more for the record, I personally think the T-Bird is a pretty good lookin' machine overall, even WITH the radiator, and yep, even WITHOUT those "fins" on the cylinder barrels I keep crackin' jokes about. AND I think it would make one fantastic long distance touring motorcycle with the addition of some bags and a windshield. (and I'll betcha Bloor's Boys come out with just such a touring version of the T-Bird next year or so too...but if they don't it wouldn't surprise me, 'cuz it seems that every so often they seem to slightly miss the mark....like say when they didn't put more pronounced FINS on the T-Bird's cylinder barrels!)

This is a strange thread indeed. Being on this site since day one, I realize that the T-bird has got everything we always wanted out of our Americas and Speedys; power, torque and cubic inches. I almost get a feeling that this site was monitored from Hinckley and they gave us what we craved. There's no doubt that the T-bird is a fantastic bike. When I rode it, I was almost shocked what speed you got still on moderately low revs. The handling was also superb. Yes, there are a few things I would change if I could afford to buy one. Just to get it the way I would see fit, but so have I done on my TBA as well. I'm also sure that I've put in more in my TBA than the difference today in cost between the two. So, please stop this BS and either be happy with what you've got or start saving for what you want. My 2 cents...

But if you remember, reminiscent of when the R3 started appearing, first with "spy" photos, then actual sightings, then somebody actually touching one. The R3 caused all manner of pro/con bru-ha, or more accurately bru-ha-ha (ha) & entertainment. Rumour has it, like the T-Bird, some folks in this neighborhood own one .
My T-Bird experience doesn't go beyond sitting on one at the Spokane dealer last summer. The motorbike sure interests me. Does it interest me enough to overcome the price differential? I don't know. Of course my m/c endorsement has only been valid for British 800 cc since 1976, so that might be the deal breaker.....
What remains an undebateable constant however is the even-tempered, well-considered view exemplified by '02 Cardinal Red BA owners 'round the world. Go figure, what are the odds?

Uh huh, yep, I certainly agree about the Cardinal Red BAs and those who were evidently "savvy" enough to purchase that color of BA early enough in its production run before Triumph subsequently made their unfortunate decision to discontinue this most striking of colors!!! EXCEPT, when Bloor's Boys bolted those UGLY-AZZ passenger footpegs holders that were supposed to look like old style tool boxes on 'em!!! At least the NEW BAs finally got rid of THOSE monstrosities...of course that was YEARS after I took 'em off my BA and threw 'em in my garage's junk pile!!!
