Eddy is saying the EBC springs he has are 15% heavier than stock, does anyone know what the Barnett green springs are rated?
Does anyone know the actual spring rates?

Check with Snekepte. He put in some heavier rate springs (Barnett?) and they were awful, almost impossible to pull the clutch lever. I think he switched back to the stock springs.

Thanks, I've decided to go heavier as my clutch slips a little under hard acceleration. I think the previous owner abused it as it always slipped a little.

Say what!
I've been running the heavy duties for a long time. Along with several others on here.
I believe there are at least three possible versions.

Do you happen to know the comparison between these and EBC that Eddy sells?

If I remember correctly the one on the left is stock.
The one in the middle is from Bellacorse and the one on the right is EBC. I think. The one in the middle is the stiffer of the three.
Maybe Eddy or some others will chime in here with more info.

I'm running Barnett springs in mine and they hold ok, and lever effort is not much different than stock. A buddy of mine just put EBC springs in his and lever effort is considerably harder than mine. Just my two cents.
By the way, if anyone needs a shift lever seal, i've got a bag full of them that i sourced through an aftermarket supplier. $2.00 apiece verses $9.00 i think for oem...

I've got the golden Barnett springs. Work like a charm (don't believe all the negative some spread about them) and felt a little harder first, but you'll get used to that. Now I don't even think about it.

I appreciate the responses, but the information Im trying to get to the root of is this.

Are the EBC springs that Fasteddy sells stiffer or softer than the Green Barnett springs. Barnett won't say what they are, and EBC says their springs are 15% stiffer than stock.

So are the Barnett green spring stiffer than the EBC springs?

In my opinion the Green Barnett are stiffer than the Gold EBC. I'm not a engineer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I am running the GOLD Barnett springs. I don't know how the green ones compare, but i found out the gold EBC springs are a little stiffer than the gold Barnett springs in my personal experience.
I'm curious how the green ones compare. Anybody here using them after swapping from either brand of the gold springs?

Never installed the gold but had all three in hand you see in the pic. To me it was obvious that the Green Barnett in the middle was beefier and harder to compress than the Gold EBC. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

In the picture are new stock on left, green barnett, gold ebc.

Green & gold, EBC & Barnett, Apples & Oranges, what we need here is a serious, all inclusive comparison test.

Where are the vendors when you really need them?

(Or the builders)

P.S., mrt202 says the EBC's ARE stiffer then the Barnetts, gold for gold. Now that says something. Now how about "The rest of the story"?

I sent an email to Barnett to quantify some data, and clarify my confusion. They responded, I have pasted here my email and their response verbatim:

To: clutchdept@barnettclutches.com

I ride a Triumph Speedmaster. In doing research on clutches and the
like, the consensus is to use EBC springs which are rated at 15% over
stock, or preferred, Barnett Green springs.

I find a Barnett spring number 501-75-04005, but I don't know what or how these
are rated, nor what color they are.

Can you help me sort this out?

Thanks,
Clay

From: clutchdept@barnettclutches.com
Clay-
I'll try to help you out as best I can. Here are the specs on the 501-75-04005 spring set and also another set of springs that are green in color and may be what people are referring to.

501-75-04005 (set of four springs)
Overall length: 1.870"
I.D.: .560"
O.D.: .770"
Coil bind @ .930"
Tension: 75 lbs @ 1" compressed

501-82-06023 (green- typically sold in a set of six)
Overall length: 1.720"
I.D.: .570"
O.D.: .780"
Coil bind @ .740"
Tension: 80 lbs @ 1" compressed

As you can see, the above springs are very close in size with the "06023" being a little stiffer. We do have one other spring that we use in the Rocket III clutch and it is even stiffer, but it has a larger I.D. and O.D. so I can't say for sure if it will fit your bike:

501-87-04009 (set of four springs)
Overall length: 1.610"
I.D.: .584"
O.D.: .810"
Coil bind @ .790"
Tension: 85 lbs @ 1" compressed

I hope this information helps- thank you for your interest in our products!

Here is what I dug up in my EBC Book:

Quote:

Always fit new springs which get tired after miles of heat and use.
EBC spring kits are 10-15% stiffer than standard and are sold in
engine sets.
As stated in general fitting/safety instructions, advise customers
that lever will feel slightly ‘heavier’ when uprating springs, and to
test ride/acquaint themselves with this change in control.

I can't find a detailed break down just yet like you got from Barnett.

I hope you do Eddy. It would be nice to have in the tech vault. At least that way we can compare apples. I'm curious now what these are made out of steel wise.

Okay here is some more interesting data. The Honda VT750 C/CD/CD2 Shadow 750CC (1998-09)

Uses the same Barnett spring kit 501-75-04005

UPDATE: The above part number springs are the GOLD Barnett springs.

I just purchased a set, which is how I know. I need to order some of the others now.

EDIT: The part number 501-82-06023 is the correct green spring from Barnett. They come in packs of 6. Also MT-23-6 is Barnetts old number.

Interesting, if I bought two sets, three of us could get new springs!
