Another couple of good films are "waterloo" which had an amazing amount of extras made up of soviet soldiers and "The battle of Britain" which used so many planes that the film makers had one of the worlds largest fleets of warplanes available to them.

I can't believe people have missed "Where eagles dare", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Bridge on the river Kwai" and "The eagle has landed", all of em classics.

Mind you some of the old British black and white films were quite good as well. "The dambusters","cockleshell heroes" and "Dunkirk" were pretty good.

But I guess that quite a lot of old British films don't actually get aired in the US very much.

Look back a few posts, mate I got one of 'em anyway.

Ok, some good war movies sure but no one here yet mentioned the greatest of them all: Tuntematon sotilas (The Unknown Soldier) of Väinö Linnas war novel.

Actually Graham, TMC(Turner Classic Movies) channel plays quite a few british films over here. In fact one of my favo(u)rites is 1942's "In Which We Serve", directed by David Lean, and starring Noel Coward and John Mills.

And, without question, another of my all-time favs ever is one that while not strictly a "war picture" per se, it does have a military theme, 1943's "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp", directed by british film industry greats Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

And BTW folks, I haven't noticed anybody mentioning "Three Kings" yet. I think that's one of the better war films made somewhat recently.

Letters from Iwo Jima... Ken Watanabe is a fantastic actor.

I really enjoyed the way Eastwood blended it with Flags of our Fathers so that there were points in the movie where you were seeing the same scene/action but from the other point of view.

I can't remember the name if it, but I always liked the movie that featured wallace Beery as a destroyer captain. He spotted a Uboat charging it's batteries just out of range of the ships guns. When he went after it, a cable got tangled in the screws (propellers), stopping the ship. Wallace Beery threw his hat on the deck and said, "I volunteered into this mans navy and I'm volunteerin' out!"

Was it "This Man's Navy" (1945)?

Is that the one with Jude Law as the sniper? If so very good flick.

There are great documentary(s) called WWII in HD running on the history channel now. If you miss the early ones, they run again late.
