After selling my 03 Speedy to finance the remodel of the new baby room last year, I have decided to get back on a Speedmaster. I took delivery of an 09 Black/White Speedmaster today. During my ride home (yeah, I took the long way home), I noticed a few things. The bike just doesn't seem to have the Pep my highly-modified 03 did. I realize that it's a brand-new bike (Has a big 32 miles on it...) and the motor is pretty tight, but the lack of power has me a bit concerned. I also noticed a large amount of vibration that I didn't have on my 03. These could be normal run-in stuff but as I have never owned a brand new bike before I'm not so sure.

I Like my new Speedy very much, and I really hope these noted items are normal with a brand-new bike. I'm going to be using it as a commuter for my daily 72-mile, round trip ride to work, and I hope my concerns are just paranoia.

Has anyone here experienced the same with a new bike?

Also, will the same mods I did to my 03 (snorkle removal/K&N air filter[or airbox removal and K&N pod install], nology coils, baffle-ectomy) net me the same gains on an 09?

I do appreciate any insight that anyone could provide.

Well the 09 may have a bigger front sprocket.. That would make a big difference right away... Not being broken in makes a huge difference also.. I noticed a jump in pep after my first oil change. Remember it's F.I. Your tweaking the carbs and intake will make the 03 quicker also.. Not sure what to tell ya about the vibes.. Every motor is different..Good luck.. I can tell you that the 09 "WILL" get better fuel mileage.. If that matters to ya?????? Enjoy. V.

Yes they will help. If you do the de-baffle or aftermarket pipes you will need the TORs map loaded by your dealer. Vector is right about the sprocket size. The 09 America and Speedy both have 18/42 sprockets. Your 03 was probably 16/42 so would have had more pick up (but shorter top end). The engine will also be noticeably perkier when she loosens up. Some of us with EFI bikes have purchased Tuneboy for hands-on refining of performance (re-mapping and tweaking the ECM).

The vibration is not normal. See your dealer about it. My 09 has nil vibration during normal riding BUT there is a head wobble or shimmy that occurs on decel BUT ONLY IF I take my hands off the bars. I have eliminated just about everything except the front tire. It's not detectable during normal riding so its not worth replacing the tyre (the dealer was no help on this one). What sort of vibration is it? Vibration originating from the engine will obviously vary with revs, while vibration from alignment or tires will be constant relative to speed.

And congratulation on your new baby Speedy - you're gonna love it (once you get used to EFI and the greater sensitivity required for throttle control.

Cheers, Richard

Congrats Mike! Did you buy it over at RPM?

I went for another ride this morning, and gotta say that the vibration isn't "Large". I'm sure it's just the motor and run-in situation.

Roadworthy, YEP! I got it from RPM. Great folks over there. I've known Steve, Steve and Theresa since 2004 (when I first got stationed here) and haven't encountered a better dealership ever.
One problem with the Speedy - At speeds above 55 mph, I get some serious buffeting from the windscreen (Triumph Large...). Might have to sell it and get something that is adjustable.

Overall - I am happy to be back on a Speedmaster. Looking forward to getting this one ran-in and modded.

Instead of getting rid of the windshield, just get a replacement screen from Clearview. All the hardware just transfers over and it works and looks fantastic!

Had the same exact wobble problem on my 07 America when it was new.It was a defective front tire. Couldn't tell by looking at it.
