I was the same way until somebody told me that using the reserve position might be a good idea to make sure it doesn't clog up somehow, so when you really need it you know it's going to work. Once every few tanks I'll run it on reserve from the start, and keep a close eye on the trip odometer...which I do anyway since I use it as a gas gauge. Every 100-120 miles I fill up and reset the trip odometer.
I've only ran out of gas once, with Dwight. Strange that one as I was only showing 135 miles on the odometer when I coasted to the side of the road, but then I was trying to keep up with Dwight on his Sprint most of the day, and that was after running 85 mph up I-15 from Phoenix to Prescott which is one big long uphill. I think I only got about 30 mpg on that tank, where I normally get 40.
