On a lark, and because the weather was so nice, I rode north Sunday afternoon on Highway 43 out of North Canton, Ohio, to Solon, a Cleveland suburb. It was urban riding, no twisty stuff, just a pleasant ride.

I puttered around Solon a bit and, while stopped at a light there, a guy on a standard motorcycle pulled up beside me.

"Yah don't see many of those," he said, nodding at my bike.

"Yah sure don't," I replied. "It's a Triumph America."

Then I saw that he was on a Triumph, too -- an older bike that had one of the older Triumph logos on the tank. The bike said "Tropy" and "650." The tank was green and white, and the bike appeared to be in good shape, although not pristine.

The guy was dressed in a shirt and jeans, without riding shoes. Pretty casual. Also lightly dressed for mid-50s weather.

We kibitzed about our bikes. His was a 1972, mine a 2008 . . . his a real classic, mine a future classic.

"Yours is a real classic," I said.

"Yep, no fuel injection on this baby."

"Not on mine, either," I added, just as the light changed, giving me no time to explain.

He turned left. I turned right.

One of those serendipitous moments while riding.

His shifted on the right side. Have you ever tried doing that?????? I have... Back in the 60s a bud of mine bought a new "then" 1969 bonnie,,,, It was the coolest bike I had seen... He let me take it for a spin.. Darn near killed myself when I tried shifting the "BRAKE".V.

A lot of us old farts here cut our teeth on Triumphs (British Iron) so we had to learn to be ambidextrous on motorcycles. Just took one or two near mishaps and I was good to go on a friend's opposite bike. But ya had to have yer wits about you, ya know!!

As a Brit of a "certain" age I am embarrassed to say I have never ridden a vintage Brit bike!! I was riding during the 60's, but Lambretta's. You see I was a mod back then, had no time for rockers and it's only relatively recently that I have discovered the world of motorcycles. My loss!

I have always had both left and right shift bikes. I have 20 antique Brit bikes (mostly Triumphs) and an old BMW so I back and forth between right and left as the mood suited me. Also had a few Jap bikes here and there.

I have a friend with a '68 BSA that he let me ride once, definitely a trick to the right side shift!

Hehe, not quite involved with the "ultra" violence portrayed in that film, Quadrophenia is more accurate. Lots of punch ups, or bundles as they were known, but weapons were rarely used.

I tried a right hand triumph once. Thankfully, it was in a big parking lot. I'll stick with the left hand clutch, thank you.

Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

I used to pretty much ride my old '68 Bonneville exclusively. However, occasionally I would ride other bikes for product reviews. I was riding a dreaded H-D on the 405 Fwy when I hit the obligatory traffic snarl. I thought I was hitting the rear brake when I down-shifted without the clutch!

That was an eye opener!

Okay Cindy tell me somethin' here...

With your right knee stickin' WAY OUT there over and around that friggin' air-cleaner on that Harley, couldn't you have used THAT as some kind of "reference point" that your RIGHT FOOT was NOW the BRAKE and not the LEFT ONE anymore???

(uh huh...I bet you didn't THINK o' THAT, now DID YA young lady???)

Wouldn't have mattered. I have right/left issues anyhow.

Aah, but you see, THAT was my point here, Cindy!!!

You didn't or don't HAVE TO know left from right when you're ridin' a Harley, because which ever knee is bent around that friggin' AIR-CLEANER stickin' out there, is going to be the side to push down on with that foot o' yours to make that lumbering motorcycle slow down!!!

Uh huh, and NOW you know WHY a lot o' Harley rider choose the brand they do! You see, it REALLY has NOTHING to do with any of that "lifestyle crap". NOOOOO...it's 'cuz many of 'em have the same problem as you have with that there "left-right thing"!

(of course THAT bit of information shouldn't surprise ANYBODY here, RIGHT???!!!)

Nah, it was a 916 (another review), when I called Pro Italia to tell them of the accident, all they said, after noting there were no real injuries, was "did you have fun?" I did, even with the slide down PCH and all was well!

WHEW!!! Well first I'm glad you seem none the worse for wear here...and secondly, while 916s are VERY cool motorcycles in their own right, I'm glad to hear that another old Bevel hasn't bitten the dust!

('cuz of course for each one that DOES, that means my chances of ever gettin' one diminished too as they become more rare)

I didn't notice if the bike had right-side shift. Wish I had. ...

erle, just for you, substitute "chatted," "yacked," "talked," "shot the sheep" for "kibitzed."
