Some time ago I put harley deuce risers on when there weren't any adaptors and I just drilled the tree. Call it what you want but it took 5 minutes and no extra cost. I've since replaced back to to SM originals after putting on a 2nd hand set of TBA bars and then finally, put another pr of risers on for my perfect posture set up.

All in all it didn't make a difference to anything and it drilled through like butter. Now that we have the adaptors you have a choice but for for me it's wasn't a big deal - Purists excepted.
