Hi guys,
Just bought my second bike, a 1999 BMW R1200LT with only 13000 miles on the clock.
My 2008 TBA is staying. I would not part with it. I wanted something for the longer runs, as the years roll on Comfort rules ok. I will post pictures in the coming weeks.
If anyone has any experience of the BMW I would love to here them.

Good luck with your new ride. Never sell, just add.

Thats low miles for that bike Derek, those BMs are only run in at 10,000. I had a R100RS 1979, wish I could have kept it.
I remember they do use a bit of oil, so keep an eye on the level.

Well you picked the right bike for comfort! I really like those too. That, or something similar will be my second bike. Just remember BMW riders tend to be like Harley riders when it comes to branding.

That is just so cool. I went surfin' for pics but mostly came up with K1200LT. I am a bit BMW envious and like you, love the idea of comfort. Nice addition!!!!!!

I gotta say that while putting an additional 7500km through Europe on Thanassis' 1996 R1100RT (which he told me he had named "Saffina" after some famous bedoiun's trusty camel, but which I soon re-named "Ol' Paint" after an old saga of a Cowboy's trusty horse...I'm from the Southwest of the U.S. remember ...but I digress) that I was so impressed with all of that Beemer's quailities, such as its smooth-running motor, comfortability, handling, available storage quantity and reliablity(and it already had over 200,000km on its clock before we even left on this ride) that I had thoughts of lookin' for a nice used RT Oilhead BMW Twin myself once I returned to the states.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Ok guys here’s the feed back I promised.
I rode the Honda Goldwing and it’s an excellent touring bike, but it felt too big and looked ostentatious. This BMW K1200 LT is something else. It is big & heavy, but not in your face and it handles in the bends like a sports bike (well nearly). The smooth power delivery and ABS brakes are awesome. I went on a 340 mile trip on Sunday covering back roads, motorways and through Dublin city traffic. The first 50mile or so was a bit intimidating, but as I got use to the weight and developed confidence, things just got better and better. I was hitting 110 mph on the motorway and it was rock steady, this thing wants to eat miles. Under 5 mph you have to watch out, she will drop like a stone if you hit that front brake with a slight turn of the front wheel. I was getting 52.1 miles to the gallon, which is very good considering the type of mixed riding I was doing.
It has all the usual features you would expect from a touring bike – ABS ,Crouse control, heated grips, heated driver & passenger seat, gear indicator, stereo system etc.
What about my trusty America I here you say. Well she is staying; they are two completely different bikes. The BMW is a bike to eat continents while the America is a bike to eat a country (Ireland anyway). The BMW has all the bells and whistles, but the America has a character that no other bike can match. So for the moment both bikes are staying in the stable, whether I will has enough straw to feed both we will wait and see.
I will post picture during the week.

Two summers ago I was quite convinced I wanted a real touring bike instead of the america. I tried a bunch including the RT and LT. I disliked the RT, feeling Like I was riding the tank all the time. I liked the LT but I didn't love it (also the seller was a bit of a jerk about what an improvement his bike would be over the america).

Still, if I could afford a second bike It would be the LT.

Glad you like the new bike there Derek!! That thing sounds like a dream machine and well, I WANT ONE TOO (while keeping my TBA of course). Yeah, our Trumpets have a lot of character and attitude. Mine will stay with me for a long time no matter what I add to the fleet.

Live to love, love to live.
