Hello everyone, picked up my new America three days ago and we are settling in nicely. I wonder though if it is common for the gear box to be rather klunky, parlticularly 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I spent 19 years with my 76 Bonnie and her gearbox was crisp. Might be a combination of me getting used to EFI and a new bike, running in the engine and gearbox etc. Anyway i wondered if anyone else might like to comment?

By the way, this is an awesome site. Well done.

Mine's an 03 and the gears are a bit clunky. I just chalk it up to being a Triumph thing. I must say though... after the last oil change to Royal Purple she's a lot smoother through the gears.

In short... you got nothing to worry about.

They still shift a heckuva lot smoother than a Harley!

Well, actually, if gears make noise AND you move forward, they are okay!

Now you've done it.

I agree with Ian. The latest white paper is out from Amsoil http://www.oildepot.ca/complete-product-line/amsoil-motor-oil-line/amsoil-motorcycle-white-paper.pdf and guess what, Amsoil and Mobil are 1 & 2 in the 40 and 50 weight catagories for cycles (See page 23/24). Royal Purple is 14th in the 40 weight and 7th in the 50 weight catagories of 17 oils tested. Price isn't an issue when it comes to my cycle. Why not go with the best?

Oh yeh, mine clunks on the initial shift from neutral to 1st. The rest are smooth.

Last oil change I used a Honda oil with the specs recommended by Triumph. I now clunk more changing to 2nd gear. Back to Mobile 1 for me.

Switching to 10-40 from 10-50 (both Amsoil) helped mine a lot.

It took me a few hundred miles to smooth out my clunky shifting... The first oil change realllllly helped.. But I started to shift rather quickly without chopping the throttle and now "MOST" of the time it feels like an automatic when I shift. What makes me mad is my wifes old 1982 650 yammie shifts like a dream without thinking about it.. Hmmmmm. Darn clever japs..MMV.

Cheers Vector, looking forward to the first service / oil change. Wll also try shifting quicker and less backing off the throttle as you suggest.
Interesting stats on the whitepaper posted by Gregger hey.
