Man just get a Harbor Freight folding trailer and a bike cover. If you have an enclosed and someone wants it bad enough they'll get the bike and the expensive trailer. With a HF folding and a cover, at least they won't know what's under the cover and will go looking for an enclosed trailer because they know there'll be a high dollar HD in it
I've heard a cover is as good as an alarm.

Phil, I think that you are going in the right direction and for the right reasons, I would say keep the idea of an enclosed trailer and not an open one. Do not be tempted to cheap out, you will have it for a long time and will find other uses for it. TR

Moe, thanks for the links. More stuff to check out!!

Brad, that might be a viable option, thanks!

newt, you find one at that or even triple the price and I will be over!!

jj_, I thought about that but I figure an enclosed would be a better investment. However, here's my plan. If I get one, I am going to have some magnetic "Ralph's Lawn Service" signs made up with fictitious addresses and phone numbers from FL, GA, SC, & NC (four different signs X2) to give it an innocent look. No Triumph or bike related stickers anywhere. I kid you not...

Thanks Tom, I hear ya!

I sincerely appreciate everyone's input (even you knucklehead jokers! ). I don't know that the possibilities have been exhausted so keep the ideas coming if you will!

Phil,

My Mom has a place up on Beech Mountain. I love that area of NC. The 4th of July week each year is the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. It is the largest Highland Games in the US. I Plan on being there this year. I will probably trailer the bike up. I have access to a friends trailer and if it isn't available I will just put the bike in the bed of the truck and take it up.

Good luck with the trailer. A used trailer might fit your budget better and then you can upgrade/customize as needed when funds become available.

A mate of mine built his own with the help of some panel beaters. It is a beauty. He was in the process of getting out of the Air Force, divorcing his wife and joining the fruit pickers circuit around Oz.

Hey Tom!

Back safe again, eh? Good deal...

When I stand on the back 'porch' of the condo, my view is Beech. I had no idea about the 4th festivities up there and thanks for the heads up. Another excuse to take vacation days! WooHoo!! We have to ride together up there, OK?

Now I have to convince the family to do our 4th party in the mountains.

Bobby,

I like that way of thinking. However, payback is helll. Now, back in my great grandpappy's day...Payback was the standard month long headache. What with sufferage and all in place now, things have gotten right difficult. Permanent makeup, a major shopping day, new car, the list goes on.

Now instead of alerting motorsickle thieves, you are going to alert lawn equipment thieves. If you do have signs made up, make up some sort of PortoLet Service Trailer sign or, no wait, how about "Sanford & Son"?

Really, in this day and age of cell phones, All you have to do is use 7 digits for the phone number, no State, and pick something like, 1057 Baxter Highway, Hooper’s Ridge. What blows it all away is the tax plate (tag) you’ll have on the trailer itself.

Yes, keep all motorsickle insignia OFF the trailer. That is about all you can do. Your choice of where you park it is the last thing under your control. Heck a drop down back gate is a dead ringer for a motorcycle anyway! When you park it and unload it, you are busted so to say. Motel parking lots and covered trailers are neon signs wherever you go.

I hear that! I guess my criteria for a motel will now include a well lit parking lot with a room near the front...

Phil, my brother and I (he owns a Harley Softail hahaha) just went in half on a used trailer from a carpenter/sheetrock guy we know (he used it for hauling large tool boxes), got it for $700; its older and in need of a paint job, but does the trick perfectly. Just keep lookin' buddy.......

No place is ever entirely safe anymore, the scums will stop at nothing to take what they didn't have the will to earn. A bro and I were up in north central Pa. last fall, the motel we stayed at had the lobby doors right off of the check in counter which is SOP. Just off of that was a no parking area. I asked if we could park our bikes there, so they could be seen from the lobby, no problem. Before the night was out, there were about ten bikes parked in the same no parking area. Just don't be afraid to ask. TR

Phil,
I'm thinking about buy a trailer too. Lot's of reasons to have one.

I used my Dakota to haul my bike to Wyoming and back a couple summers ago. It worked great. I laid some plywood on the bed which extended out over the tailgate. I stabilized the front wheel with some boards. I double strapped everything. I bought a folding ramp at Northern Equipment. I put on 2000 miles on the truck and 600 miles on the bike after I got there.

Phil,

I plan on being up there over the 4th of July week. So come on up and we'll go riding. We can ride across Grandfather Mountain to the Blue Ridge Parkway and then down to Mt Mitchell. Or twenty other great rides. I just wish my cell phone worked up there.

The July 4th week is a great week to be in the NC High Country. We are there every year for that week. The parade in downtown Boone is what parades are supposed to be like; the classic car show and parade in Banner Elk are great; listening to the pipes and watching the Highland Games at Grandfather; an afternoon of kayaking the New River followed by listening to Doc Watson and friends at the Todd General Store; a BBQ plate and a couple of extremely cold ones from Pappy's; being able to see fireworks celebrations for a hundred miles each way from the top of the mountain; another couple of extremely cold ones from Pappy's; listening to the kids trying to spot any non-Florida license tags (sorry guys - bikers welcome).

Seriously, that is a great week. Lots of traffic, which makes those rides out of town that much better.

How do you get it up and down? Ride, push, winch?
I'm hesitant just riding mine up on trailer and walking back down while astride it.

Hi Lee,

More like at the southern point! From Gatlinburg TN, South on 441 to where the temps start to rise, that is where the Blue Ridge Parkway starts...

Had a buddy this weekend tell me about a guy up North that showed up for a ride with his bike on an open trailer. It rained on his trip down and he had the whole bike wrapped in Saran Wrap. Said it kept the water off.

Well, I went and done did it. I bought a trailer. Went round and round with this decision and due to many factors, I settled on one that's called Trailer in a Bag and is literally that. It breaks down into component pieces and can be stored in my truck. The trailer is VERY sturdy and well built. Here's a pic from their website:

Nice trailer. Couple questions though.
Did you notice only one picture of a Triumph on one of these trailers?
And did you watch the "How NOT to load a bike?"

Could it be that "I'm not driving all that way" means she wants to be the one to ride?

Only trailer I know of for sale at the moment is selling for $8K. But, it comes with a running 1915 Ford depot wagon.

That's because people with Triumphs don't trailer them (unless you have a non-riding wife! ).

Phil,

Once you get that puppy on the road and have a few miles on it, give us a report of your impressions and/or any problems you may run into with this.

I've seen this trailer advertised in Walnecks and liked the idea behind it that it doesn't take up much room in the garage when it's being stored, and that you could just toss it in the trunk of a car or the bed of a pickup to transport it when not actually being used, but I was unsure about it's performace on the road.

Cheers,
Dwight

Judgeing from all the pics of H-Ds on thier website,
plus the fact that many dealers are H-D dealers,
it's gotta be a niffty unit.
Cause we all KNOW that H-D owners love thier trailers!!!

phil, with those small wheels you may want to think about getting some bearing buddies caps and bring a grease gun with you and every once in awhile give them bearings a shot of grease. those small wheels have a tendency to heat up and lock the bearings. there was a dealer at the roadhouse a couple weeks ago and i looked that trailer over pretty good, seems like a nice little trailer and with its ability to fold up, storage isnt an issue, nice little trailer. i prefer enclosed myself but for what you have in mind it aughta be just fine. thought i would mention the bearings though.

I thought so too newt but check out questions 1 & 2 on their FAQ Page

Dwight, I will assuredly write a report on it. I had found a review on the trailer over on epinions.com and wrote to the guy concerning price (he got his for $500 three years ago and they are now $1195!!). Unsolicited, he responded about how much he loves the trailer, how well it performs, etc. (does not work for them, btw). He's local, so I went to talk to him and see his trailer. He's got over 30k (Harley guy ) on the trailer and it still looks new. Made me even more impressed...

I could not find anything negative about it anywhere and that's pretty impressive considering how many people are now 'web enabled'. Typically, someone is going to have a problem with SOME aspect...
