I wave when waved at except at times I need to be downshifting, holding the clutch sitting, or anytime I feel it's not safe. I still nod or make some acknowledgment if I can. Common sense should rule. Nothing wrong with waving as long as in a safe situation.
Sport bike riders seem to have a lot more free use of their left hand. That's why it's usually resting on their left hip.
