Well , I know this is only of interest to those of us in the "green industry" but as of December 31st of this year MSMA will no longer be available for sale in the good 'ol US of A , except for restricted use. That means that this wonderfully inexpensive herbicide will no longer be available to attack the pesky grassy weeds "i.e. crabgrass" in your lawn or favorite golf course...... so if you want to be a real outlaw....buy ya some for later because after 12-31-09............it will be gone with the wind !

As part of my "day job" I do a lot of herbicide recommendations & applicator training. We don't have crabgrass or sandburs to any degree in this country, so I had to look up MSMA.

I wonder if they are changing the designation due to illegal "off-label" use, ie people applying it on hay fields and pastures? From what I read there is a hazard for grazing animals consuming treated forage.

Then again I don't know the particulars.......

Why ? well , Arsenic is part of this inorganic herbicide molecule. Even though it is tightly bound in the compound and basically "nullified" once in the soil AND carries only a caution label it is thought by some environmentalist that this arsenical should be banned because of it. There is no soil residual (except in pure sands) and on a toxicity list ranks well down the list from caffine , nicotine and asperin. Actually , I see us here in the USA going the way of some provinces in Canada and banning ALL pesticides for environmental reasons. No one here can see the justification of this draconian measure outside of pleasing the extreme of the environmentalist ....a key political group in some circles !

Properly called Ecochondriacs.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I just read an artical about this in a golf superintendent magazine. A complete ban on herbicides would kill the industry. Who wants to hit from crabgrass fairways? Part of the problem in the past was over aplication, causing it to show up in runoff. Now most superintendents are applying less, but more frequently with better results.
