Installed 412 hd's yesterday.

Recomended HD for person over 200 lbs or extra baggage added to bike(same thing).

Is there a break-in-period for these things cause it's a FIRM RIDE.

While i'm at it i replaced fork springs with Progressive springs,,,,,theyre about an inch longer than stock.

do they need a break-in to?

thanks,,,les

I also went with the 412's but the standard, I'm at a little over 200 and I felt the difference right away over stock. As for as the front springs I just cut the pvc spacer so everything compressed to the stock length and I have had no regrets at all. Also as Yota said play with different preload settings it can make a big difference in the ride. Good luck and ride safe!

My Progressive fork springs took a "set" shortly after installation & needed 10mm longer PVC spacers to get the ride that I wanted. My 412's are set on preload # 2 & are just fine on that setting; # 1 had too much sag & # 3 was too little.

Eat more cheeseburgers and preload it with yourself. I wonder how much more weight I'll have to lose before I can crank down the preload on my 412HD's...

Turn the preload UP?

20 minute on medium bumpy road and my gonads were hurt'n.

and you say bump it up one?

Right now i have about one inch of sag at rear(tire) and about 3/4 inch at front(fork)when i get on my America.

Hows do those numbers sound?

If your under 230 pounds the ride is going to be stiffer. HD are recommended for #230 plus (single rider) or if you ride with passenger and gear at 460 50% of the time.

I had the exact same problem. 412HD too stiff for me. Phone Progressive and they will send you the Standard Weight springs for $30 plus shipping. You have to install springs yourself. Compression is tricky. I made a box type of cap and used a friends 2 ton press. Better yet, send the whole works back to Progressive and have them install new springs. Better yet, buy the 440's or Hagon Nitros. I'm not impressed with the 412's.

Here's a pix of the device I made to aid in compressing the springs. It's 2 1/2" Sq outside and 2 1/4" inside measurements. 3" tall. Cut out is 1 1/4" high. Necessary so you can get to clip and retainer. Shock was held at the bottom in a small vice, and that was clamped to the bed of the press.Top of shock had strips of duct tape applied to protect chrome. Homemade device was set on top of shock cap, piece of plate steel on top and press came down to compress shock about 1 1/2"s. C clip pliers released C clip. 2 rubber bumpers removed and finally remove shock retainer. Release pressure. Remove one spring and insert new spring. Reverse procedure.

Got the springs in the mail today.

$37 with deliv.

20 minutes later their replaced and back on the bike.

Thanks Shutterbug for the pic.
I modified your idea for a spring compressor.
Took longer to make than to install the springs.

Thanks to all for the advice.

Anyone need a pair 412 HD springs and compressor?
