I don't think a tach is imperitive and mostly everyone here would agree but they are worthwhile.
I do use mine quite often but obviously not as much as my speedo for instance. I'm sure glad the speedo isn't down on the tank too.
When I travel though I like to look at how many revs I'm doing compared to my speed. It's just a habit that isn't necessary but handy.
Sometimes looking for that elusive 6th gear will also be a time when I look at the tacho cos after a while you know what gear you're in according to what revs you're doing.
Another good thing about the tacho was when I went from a 16 inch counter sprocket to a 17 incher. It was nice to see those lower 500 rpms on the tacho. I think it was about 500

Actually, when I think about it. I sort of take the thing for granted and it's just info I'd prefer to have than not.
It also looks better than just having a badge.
Can't think of anything else other than what's been said in the affirmative already.
I suppose I could put it this way, in a priority sense I would prefer to have my engine temp and pressure gauges than the tacho but eventually I'd get the tacho just because they are useful and look good.
