It's a very easy install, just plug it in under the console and off you go.

Look on ebay or post a want to buy ad in the classifieds here. Or get an aftermarket one, some have gone that route too.

Check out the Drag Specialties tach if you want to save $$$ and don't mind aftermarket. I think I paid less than $100 from one of our vendors and it's a perfect fit.
I couldn't find it on FeS or NB, so I went out to the garage; DS Mini Tach, Part #DS244138.

Looks like the DS part # is now 2211-0058 and $73.95. Anybody with a measure confirm that this is the correct one?

The only time you will use the tach is if you do your own work, setting the pilot screws or balancing the carbs. Other than that, you will learn to shift by ear, depending on how you ride. If you like to wind it out and want to shift just before the rev limiter kicks in, you will find 2 things: The Triumph tach is like the speedometer - not the most accurate instrument, and, when you're heading for the rev limiter, the last thing you want to be doing is staring at the top of the fuel tank.....

I agree with Smaug, a bike doesn't seem right without a tach. Sure, you can shift by ear, but when you're really beating the bike through the twisties, dragging from light to light, or just want to pass someone (smartly), it's always good to know what your engine speed is. Before I got the tach I felt I was over revving her, turns out I was barely pulling 5k! It's also the easiest thing I've ever installed on a bike, just plug-n-play, very straightforward.

I love having a tach. Can't imagine a bike or sports car without one. The cost to have a tach designed to fit right in like it belongs is worth the money. It should have been there to begin with. Mine was installed before it left the showroom.

Sometimes I use it in Trafic, having to up shift and down shift several times, Not quite sure if I'm in high gear. A quick look at the tach instead of trying to shift into that elusive "6th" gear.

Must do up-grades.....AI removal, K&N air filter ,pipes ( TOR's or etc) AND the Triumph Tach in the console...look cool and is functional ! p.s. oil pressure gauge is also a nice touch.

when the speedo suffers the yankee syndrome (in the wind at near freezing temps traveling over 80mph) and no longer reads semi accurately, then the tach stands in place of the speedo.
And mr newbie, er smaug,
fleabay has some for sale. check pinwall cycles. usually you can buy the whole tank console complete with idiot lens and yep a tach. for less than 100 bucks. that's how Cinnamon Girl got her groove back, er got her tach.

I've had the Drag Specialties tach for a few years now, works great. I changed the bulb for an LED, it was too bright at night. If you are handy with tools and wiring, you can't go wrong with it. Instructions are in the Tech vault somewhere. If you are mechanically challenged, the Triumph tach is simple plug-and-play.

Am I in 5th? Let's see, is the tach at 4,000K? Yup, I'm in 5th.

How is that off topic? What does the plastic cluster have to do with the price of the tach?
Your right....you started the thread and I have contibuted and asked a question. Is there a problem with my question?

Ha!, but you weren't smart enough to know that since the 70's ALL factory tachs have plastic parts, (motorcycle, automobile, etc)?

Welcome john. Don't pay any attention to the "attitudes" earlier in this thread. Some people just don't ride enough to get it out of their system.

Do too! And it wouldn't be any fun without 'em. Happy Thanksgiving everbody. While you're belly up to the table tomorrow, I'll be processing your mail for Friday's delivery! I picked up 10 pumpkin pies from the bakery tonight to keep the troops happy. Hope I got enough Reddi Whip.

I had the OEM tach installed at the time of purchase. I particularly liked it when I was breaking the bike in, since I was told to stay within 5000 rpm's for the first 400 miles or so. I use it less now, but I like having it. I'm on my second one though. The first one got stuck anywhere from 1000-2000 rpms when I turned the bike off. Had to flick the kill switch a few times to get it back to zero. Apparently some issues with a particular batch of them. The second one has had no problems.

I got the tach for mine to complete the look. Haven't actually ever really needed to use it !!! I just shift by feel. If I'm ever spinnin the thing up to redline altitude I'm too busy to glance down at the tach.
