I wonder about the coincidence of Michael Jackson's death and the sudden availability of these products.

Not connected. The engineers have been working hard for several years on re-mastering the recordings to make amends for the dismal re-releases of their works that began way back in 1987. Some very light compression and enhancement to remove clicks and noise while keeping all of the other artifacts of the original recordings will be a welcome addition to my library.

I'm most interested in the mono mixes so it's going to be the box set for me; the original masters where all mixed in mono (at least thru Sgt. Pepper's) since the band wasn't really interested in stereo. That left Martin and Emerick to do the stereo mixes and I, for one, would really like to hear what the band intended.

As for the Sony/ATV partnership with MJ, they only own Northern Songs and that's just a partial catalog of the Beatles songs. Sony/ATV owns 50% with MJs estate owning 50% but it's a common and persistent myth that he held the catalog exclusively.
