Well it's not often I can make a contribution in the Tech section. This topic has been covered before but what the heck... I wanna post this anyway. So... I wanted a white wall tire to replace the stock Bridgestone (thank gawd that thing wore out). Researched what's out there and as many of you know there seems to be only one available, which is the Dunlop K177 120/90-18. This tire is about 1.5" taller and quite a bit fatter. The width is not a problem but the height is and I had to modify the fender mounts. I made up a bracket which bolts to the original. Have a look at pics below. Here's the add-on brackets I made. The holes are 1" apart. The next 4 pics are just different views of the bracket in place. And finally the new look. I like the look of a beefier tire and I LOVE the handling. Took 'er out yesterday and snorted through a few mountain roads and the new tire felt great. Thanks to everyone for helping with the tire and fender mod ideas. Once again, this site rocks.

Very clean looking mod. The screw height or lack there of and the acorn nuts are a nice touch. Looks good!

Is this kinda sorta maybe what you had in mind Z?
And another perc to using this tire over the stock... it pretty much sorts out the inaccuracy of the speedo. Almost dead on now!!!

Well sir... you're a big part of the inspiration, so thanks very much. You should know I found a set of vintage Shoei hardbags exactly like yours. I recently rechromed the rails and will soon see the bags painted cardinal red. Sound familiar? I can hardly wait to get them mounted. And when that back tire wears out a new beautiful ww will take it's place.

I was meaning to do this modification over a year ago, but I rode it without a fender back when I changed the tire and liked it so much that I never went back. Maybe I'll get around to it when I finally decide to get the bike inspected...haha

Hey Keith, Since when did you become a techy??? That is a work of art. A techy and an artist (ARETEEST that is) all in one. Imagine that BTW where did you get the chrome fender trim?

Thanks for the compliments there Greg. Well I'm definitely not a techy but I do know just enough to be dangerous! That chrome fender trim came from a bulk roll at the automotive parts store. It just that door edging stuff for cars. Trimmed things up pretty good, eh?

Nah, they're not available to buy. Good idea though. I just sort of hacked at the pair I made. You, or someone else will have to make em up but they're easy enough to do if you got some basic tools.

Chroming stuff is super expensive. I mean, be seated when getting a quote 'cause it leads to dizziness and some even black out.

Looks good the fender seems to fit the tire radius better too

Keith, Why did you choose to go back to the stock tire size? I am right now trying to decide if I want to go to whitewalls front and rear. Have been thinking of this for a while, and since my front failed inspection today, I need to decide asap. If I go whitewall, the front will require the fatty Dunlop K177 120/90-18, and your mod to raise the fender. I am very curious why you went back to the stock size. Handling? Price? just want to know, because I think it looks great! Thanks, Carl

Carl, I LOVE those WWW tires and the only reason I went back to stock was because I bought a set of alloy wheels which had a brand new set of stock tires on them. As my set of WWW Dunlops had worn out I figured I might as well get what I can from the stock tires before I spring for a new set of white walls. It's only temporary madness you understand.

You are gonna LOVE them! They grip the road well, look awesome and handle superbly. I look forward to running them again just as soon as I wear out this particular set of stock sized tires (which shouldn't take too long)! PS... please post a picture of those beautiful WWW Dunlops once you get them on your bike!

Hey all! Well I spent most of the day yesterday making the brackets. After numerous attempts I finally got a finished product that I'm happy with. I went through a few variations on ways to create it but I finally got it. For those that are interested in doing this in the future I'm posting a diagram of the final plan for others to use. The material I ended up going with was a sheet of 16 gauge welding steel. I got it at Lowes for $10. The plan below allows for 1 1/4" between center of hole to center of hole. The hole's them selves are drilled out using a 3/8" bit. The program I used put stuff in digits but for those that don't feel like figuring it out, .38" = 3/8" and .5" = 1/2". And here's the final product: I mounted the bracket once I was done cutting for a mock fit. This kind of bent the piece to the shape that contoured the fork and fender mount. Since I had a specific bottom now, I then rounded off the corners for a more finished look. Then I painted using flat black engine enamel ($6 at Lowes). Well... there it is! I'll be ordering my K177 & K555 today for my Caspian Blue America! WOOT! :-D

Keith: Thanks for the welcome! I'm just glad I could contribute. I figured taking a few minutes to come up with that would save someone else hours when it comes time to do it. Plus, it's something someone could take to a machine shop now to have machined or CNC'ed.

Alrighty... it's official! I just placed my order at Motorcycle Superstore for my K555 and K177's! They'll be here on Thursday and hopefully I can get them installed that day. Pictures are sure to follow by this weekend! Woo hoo!
As an added bonus, they just sent out a 10% off Dunlop coupon so I got like $30 off the purchase! Woo hoo again!

Alrighty... bike's at the shop gettin' the WWW's on. A K177 up front and a K555 in the back.
The guy came back out after seein' what's on there now (a Dunlop 100/90/18) and asked "Have you done your research on that front tire? You know that's a 120 right?". I chuckled and said "Yup! I've definitely done my research!"
I'll have the bike back tomorrow, pictures tomorrow, and seeing the twisties this weekend.
By the way.... we don't have any issues with clearance with the width of the tire right?

Louis, She's a beauty for sure! I just got my wheels with the Dunlop WWWs back from the shop today. I mounted em tonight, but still need to finish mounting the rear brake, align the rear tire/tighten the chain and do the front fender. Tomorrow is busy, but I hope to be done Sunday. I will post some pics then or next week, depending on when I get a chance to clean her up.

Keith,
I was just out taking a look at the bike for the trip to work tomorrow (first trip to work ever) and spent a bit of time paying attention to the tires.
The part of the original bracket that conforms to the fork, how close is that to your tire? (Edit: How close was that to your tire?)
If I'm not mistaken, the tire becomes thinner at speed right?

Hey Louis, I can't remember how close the bracket was to the tire but I never had a problem.
(I'm back to stock tire sizes on a set I got a smokin' deal on after I wore my WWW Dunlops out.)

Louis, I just put the WWW Dunlops on my bike and had my first ride tonight. On my bike it is quite close. I have about 1/8 inch clearance between the sidewall and that contoured piece. To put my mind at ease after your question, I did a little research on the effect of centrifugal force on a tire. A tire does get skinnier as it rotates faster. A good example is watching a dragster. When they start off, the tires start spinning and they get taller and skinnier. Higher air pressure in the tire decreases the effect. Carl

Digging up an old thread but have a question. Did the 16 gauge plates work out ok or would 1/4" plates be better. Need to know cause I had both in my hand at Lowes today.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been on a social hiatus. The 16 gauge has been holding up perfectly but you've probably already done the mod.

Thank you so much for putting the design up of the fender mod plate. I am having my friend, who does laser cutting for me make a couple of these plates for me to do the fender mod for a wider white wall tire.

Are there any www tires left out there for the front wheel of our bikes? From what I understand Dunlop stopped making them.

Keith, I just ordered a set of dunlop ww tires from Motorcycle superstore. And had them in 3 days with no shipping charge. Also ordered tubes and rim strip tape for both.

The rim strip on the rear tires is ridiculously wide, or at least the oem tape is. That is due to the spokes being spaced very wide on the rear rim. You will want to replace the rim strips as I betcha the rims are rusty and as such have compromised the integrity of the strips. You must replace them.
That said, before I ordered an inventory of oem rear rim strips, I would use one of the aftermarket rim strips on the rear wheel then put the compromised oem strip over that. Yes I was running with two rim strips on the rear wheel.
Just a heads up is all.
Also, you might ensure that the installer cleans your rim thoroughly. Ask that they spray the inside of the wheel well with some sort of metal protector before they install the rim strip(s).
